If I buy a new Compaq Ipaq H3870 with built in bluetooth, can I sync to my PC wirelessly if I have a bluetooth card in my PC?

How....just by using HotSync? You bring the Ipaq into the office & it will be picked up by the bluetooth card in the PC and it will seamlessly sync?

N.B It wont be running on a wireless LAN as the PC is on a Token Ring network.

In theory you can do ActiveSync over serial, IR, USB, LAN, WLAN or Bluetooth.

Be warned, ActiveSync over Bluetooth can be tempremental.

In practice I have not been able to make it work over Bluetooth using my setup. I have the Nokia Bluetooth Connectivity kit which is basically a Bluetooth CF Card that I fit into my laptop using a PCMCIA adapter and use this to link the laptop to my Nokia 6210 with a Bluetooth battery for dial up. I also use the nokia to browse the web from the iPAQ & check email.

I can discover the iPAQ from the laptop, establish the bluetooth connection over a virtual serial port (COM7 in my case), but when I initiate the ActiveSync on the iPAQ the green icon in the taskbar just spins and it can't connect.

I have applied all the upgrades and the Bluetooth service pack to the iPAQ, all to no avail.

HTH,

Alex

Some have it working fine. I used bluetooth from my ipaq to my Ericson T68, it's superb especially when using GPRS.

Greg,

Absolutely, I use BT for GPRS/GSM connectivity from the iPAQ and it is fantastic. What I was saying was that the ActiveSync is tempremental, and in my case, completely doesn't work.

The ability to surf & check mail anywhere is enough reason to go Bluetooth/GPRS, it would just be great if you could do a wireless BT Activesync rather than having to use a cable/cradle or line up a fiddly IR connection.

The activesync issue seems to be some sort of compatability between the host adapter and the iPAQ.

cheers,
