Default Rogue iphone app/malware

My receptionist has come me all in a fluster asking for help as she's found her iPhone 4s sending out spam messages to contacts in her email.

There is a shed load of apps on there installed by her daughter, so its probably one of those at fault.

I looked in the settings, but cannot find anything that restricts aps from acceses email or internet. So I told her to delete all the apps (except for the obvious legit ones like bbc iplayer etc. ) and reboot the phone.

Is that enough to sort it, or is there any free scan tools you can download to check the phone?

Is the phone jailbroken? I ask as typically apps from the App store should not be sending out spam emails. That's not to say there aren't rouge apps in the App Store. If she has not deleted all the apps, take screenshots of all of them, post them up. If there is a dodgy app spamming people then it should be reported back to Apple who'll quite possibly pull it from the store.

Are you sure it's even from the iPhone? Who's her email provider, that is where I'd look first

Just delete all the free ones as paid for ones will generally not spam your phone/tablet..

It will be more than likely direct from the email. As been mentioned lots of times, Virus and malware are not as common on IOS as windows. (thats not to say they dont exist).

The wifes YAHOO was sending out spam before. Never did find out what is was, but it stopped

No not jailbroken. She doesn't even know what that means.

Apps have been deleted, but I asked her to write them down so I could google them when I had the chance. There was **** loads on there.

Thinking about it now a hacked email account is a possibility.

However how does that manage to email to people in her contacts...apparantly the phone is never used with a computer, so no iTunes, no syncing, nothing (and no, its probably not backed up either). Unless shes got confused.

I think I need to have alook at the way her emails account is setup, as the only way I can see this happening is if the contacts on the phone have been synced to a contacts list in a webmail account which has since been compromised.

I'll have to do it tomorrow now as shes gone home now.

Cheers
