both AMD and intel are pretty much neck and neck, one is slightly cheaper (AMD) and the other is slightly faster (intel).
just get the latest motherboard coz they will become old hat in a matter of months anyway. it's all down to how much you can afford and how much you are willing to pay.
have a look at scan today only special for everyday cheapo components.

316.08 actually got 2ghz Xeon thats why i thought hmmmmmmmmmmm so far ive being told.....we could supply you with an Abit TH7-II RAID. This board supports P4's and
has RAID, and is basically the fastest, most powerful P4 board on the
market. It is designed for use with ultra-fast RAMBUS (RDRAM) memory. This
type of RAM has to be fitted in pairs. These boards cost just under £160.
If you wanted something a bit cheaper, and which uses the cheaper (but
slower) DDR memory, then a board like the Gigabyte GA-8IRX would be your
best bet. This is the fastest P4 DDR board on the market. It doesn't have
RAID, but costs only £119.99 inc.VAT
also supports the 533 bus to! just asked!

Try for a bit of balance - if you are playing games, then consider your graphics card.
Programming is a non issue - you could compile on a 1Ghz easy.
3dSM is a killer, but for £500 you may as well preview during the day and render at night, and get a moderatly cheap PC. Twin Xeons are not much quicker than twin Athlon MP's, but I wouldn't go there, as you will have to spend £60 on a PSU and £100 on a server case, plus you get no speed up on games.
I'd buy a Athlon 2000+ and as much RAM as possible - and then pay for some software
EDIT: Poor Engerlish.

You try java testing on a 1ghz machine 1000 times * 10?? then your ****ed!! seriously it took ages and with the dead line approaching!"
Think its gonna be the Abit S478 Intel 850 ATX A R Mfr Code TH7-II-RAID
with n over clock 1.8

Whats the northwood?
Also i had to run it 1000times to calculate input and search times on a linked list, array n hash table to compare

Northwood is the .13 micron P4 chip. Has 512KB L2 cache and is smaller, running cooler. However you can only get it speeds 2.0Ghz and above.
Basically P4 pre Northwood and sans Rambus were kicked firmly into touch by AMD (on performance + value), hence my recommendation.
To go back to Java - I write software all-day everyday on a 1Ghz PIII notebook, and frankly, it is pretty much fast enough for everything code wise. Speed it up with a quicker disk, sure, but really - save the cash and go down the SU.
EDIT: Ooops. Looks as though Intel have migrated more chips to Northwood. Most P4's speeds available as Northwoods. Look for the 'A' in the name... Apologies

My price list has Northwood P4s available in 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 & 2.2Ghz flavours.

I've got a SOYO Dragon Ultra, P4 2.0Ghz and 512Mb DDR arriving today
I'll let you know what its like. I wanted a RAID board (having just had another bloody HD crash) for the mirroring.
Got the board from www.chillblast.com and the CPU for £207 (advantage of trade suppliers!).
