Gran Turismo 5 and SSD. Upgrade your ride!!
This may have, no - most likely has been done before, but I wanted to share my own findings in relation to improving console performance in GT5.
The Playstation3 hardware is pretty much finite, with PD squeezing almost every ounce of performance out of the electronics in the little black box.
The only thing we can probably change or upgrade as users is the Hard Disk. I decided to stick my hand in my pocket and buy a 256GB SSD.... And to say I'm pleased with the results is a bit of an understatement!!
I've created a simple YouTube video with me starting from a PS3 dashboard view, and clicking through various menus in the game.
This video has not been altered in duration. All I've added is a bit of fade at the end, and a title at the beginning.
I'm interested to hear others' thoughts, and findings if they've also gone down the same route. Also, if anyone's able to post their speeds from stock hardware I'd also appreciate it.

I can't believe you went to the trouble of doing all that post-testing without first doing the tests with the standard box?
I haven't the time or inclination to time it on mine but suffice to say your SSD setup is waaaaay faster than the snoozefest that it is normally.

I know, but I could just tell it was super fast compared to the old install. I still have it somewhere, but can't be arsed to put it all back.
Was hoping someone might post comparison figures... You never know.
It didn't actually take too long to do - basically as long as the video plays for. The timings were just grabbed from the video at key points.

Mine's out of a DELL laptop - it's probably about 18 months old now so won't be the fastest of the bunch.
Here are a couple of new(ish) deals I found for you
£90 for 128GB
£160 for 240GB
**edit** £73 for 120GB

Basically..... (summarised)
Fire up the PS3 and attach a FAT32 USB hard disk to one of the USB ports. Make sure it's detected by the system.
Browse to the preferences, and into the System menu.
I chose the built-in backup option, and chose the USB drive as a destination. Took about 3 hours (60GB in my case).
When finished, Turn off the PS3 and whip out the old hard disk.
Put in the SSD and fire up the PS3.
The new drive should be recognised, and the PS3 will want to initialise/format it accordingly.
Once formatted, use the same external HDD to restore the data to the PS3 from the external HDD.
...that's it!
