Any SEO experts on here?
Evening all.
Do any of you experts have any tips for achieving a high placement on Google?
It's been ages since I've had to submit a site to search engines - Google didn't even exist in those days!
Any tips gratefully received.

Create a site with its content obviously
domain something like - wedding-caterers.co.uk
Your web site title - wedding catering blah blah - keep is short and simple
create a description meta tag
Header of the site - H1 - wedding catering blah blah - keep is short and simple
images - filenames - catering.jpg etc with title tags
after images - menu with tags/titles - same as above
main content - H2 - welcome to blah blah
content - <p> paragraph of what you offer
footer - page links - brief decription
next page = parties - same as above
do not copy any content, use alternate words - catering, caterers, party food suppliers etc
upload it, submit url in google
make a simple site first, google will list it, even if its a simple white page with text on
simple sites get listed quicker and higher in my experience
change it as you go along

best way to see if a site is good is turn off the images in your browser (actually do it) your now not to far off what google can read from your site.
content is king! you need gumf about hog roasts, weddings, maybe recipes, update the site at least once a month with new pics, where you have been etc etc (basic blog system will be fine.)
Choose your keywords (Research! Research! Research!) they will not be what you think they are!
I like keyword rich domain names as they always work well for me but I would imagine all of the good hog roast ones have gone, make sure its easy to spell! and not too long...
how about:
spinninghogroast.co.uk
make sure you have a google sitemap in place, post a few links on gumtree to get the site picked up by google and wait...

Thanks. I have "hog roast" in the domain name The google sitemap has been submited for the beta of the site.
I've put a link from another site I maintain which has a fairly high position on Google.

I think you are misunderstanding the reason for using gumtree, it gets your site crawled an picked up by google asap, you can submit a site to google hundred times and it still might not cache it, you need links in to get things moving.

Probably the single best thing you can do is have an expert analyse your site, and chosen phrase and then alaso analyse its ten biggest competitors and write you a comprehensive report detailing precisely why your competitors pages are ranking higher than yours.
That will allow you to fix yours and you will learn a great deal in the process.

I do website SEO, If you're targeting a smaller geographic location then it'll be much easier for you. I target St Helens, Merseyside. If you Google "Website SEO St Helens" I'm top. "Website SEO Merseyside" I vary in the top three positions of page one.
Take a look at the articles about Website SEO on my website

I've been working through the various tips I've received, slowly putting them in. The site is still not 100% ready, but it's slowly getting there.
My current head-ache is W3C validation which is currently making my eyes spin around in my head! It's the Google+1 button and some revolving content in a < div> which is driving me insane!
