Question Which anti virus/internet protection product?

I think this will be quite beneficial to most, but what protection do you give to your pc?
I've just upgraded from my old Kaspersky internet to Kaspersky Pure (its on special at PC world just now ) and it seems much nicer than its lesser brother, and comes with more functions (though im still playing with it )
I hear that Norton have improved things over the last couple of years, though I think they damaged their reputation with a product that you could not remove 100% with the disc and instead had to go searching across the internet to find that norton provide a full removal tool to do so instead....

Remember that an internet protection product will be anti virus, anti phishing, fire wall, spam filter etc, where as anti virus is just that on its own.

I used to be Kaspersky as I get it free from Barclays however I found it to be resource hungry compared to Microsofts Security Essentials and that is what I use and recommend to people now.

I have never needed spybot or its like. Windows firewall, microsoft security essentials and browser security switched on is all you will need and that is all free.

I have a 60 user license of AVG business in work and se the free version at home, another of my companies I look after has microsoft security essentials and it is fine too. have come to the conclusion that the top 5 or 6 companies all do a good job, its the smaller ones that still dont have the resources to fight new bugs and viruses as quickly and comprehensively as the bigger boys.

AVG has a deserved reputation for not being very good. I personally have seen machines riddled with nasty bugs which AVG has simply missed. Definitely one to avoid.

Have used MS Security Essentials a lot and it seems to a pretty decent job for a freebie. I personally use Nod32 at the moment (got a good deal on a 3 year license). Been using it for years and have never been infected with anything

I use ESET Smart Security; have done for years without any problem whatsoever. Amazing how it does what it does with very little effect on PC performance - in that respect it compares very favourably to Kaspersky, which, in my experience, was awful.

That's what you think

Seriously though how would you know, if the virus/trojan/whatever is stealthy enough you may never know it's infected your machine.

You need three products. One to tell you you're infected, one to say you're not and one to settle the argument.

This is quite true......... people use MS Security Essentials and the like (usually the free software products) and say oh its free and it works fine, but as above, how do you know?

I have dealt with customers at work who have used such software only to report "oh my PC's running slow", "oh its started doing odd things" etc etc. MS Security Essentials, AVG etc report/detect jack sh!te. You then run something like Malwarebytes etc and it finds several infections.

Once remove, oh look the PC is running fine now!

No Anti Virus is 100%. A bit of common sense is all thats needed most of the time as virus's dont just hop onto ones PC

what a nightmare to get rid of managed to trick it to reshow her stuff and backed her gear up, her PC was a bit clogged up in the first place so just reinstalled the recovery image

Erm because plenty of IT professionals use it including myself, the product is widely recomended and reviewed as an excellent product. So I know my machines are running fine and are protected perfectly fine by MS Security Essentials thanks.

If I was going to spend money on an av product then there is only one choice for me and that is Sophos. I have worked for several global companies with huge IT budgets and Sophos is always the number one choice where ever I have worked. However I have no need for an enterprise av solution at home so MSSE does the job perfectly for home users.

Yes they do despite the Mac worshippers telling you otherwise. Sophos have been extremely kind to Mac users and provide a free client. I use it on my OSX vms and it's very good as you'd expect from them.

Glad it's working well for you though

Were they even updating it regularly and scanning when prompted? No AV product is perfect so if you go surfing dodgy **** sites you take the risks no matter what you have installed. There is then obviously false positives which can happen.

Those that suffer loads of viruses/malware tend in my expeience to be those who know very little about pcs and how to safely use a them online and again any product you install on their pc will be ineffective if they don't keep it updated or scanning often.

Norton, AVG, ESET, Comodo, Avast Mcafee, Kaspersky, BullGuard & Sygate.
All of them let one or two Trojans through at some point, no anti virus or firewall is 100% safe but what you need to do is & pretty obvious:
Update & scan daily, i always click on manual update regardless of any auto updates.
Run a good anti spyware daily. Ad aware, spybot

Scan daily
Did i mention scan daily?

*edit*
I also change my security product every other month between different makes just to make sure there isnt something being missed. Then reinstall the preferred product.
Look for deals. search google was good offers, when you find one for a particular product search again for another 15 mins & you will save a good bit
