I have an 8800gtx in mine and have no problems with games but mine is i5cpu and 16 gig of ram. Are you sure spending the cash on a GPU will do?

As above sometimes GPU bottleneck your CPU,this means GPU is faster than CPU...
For good gaming experience i3/i5 and 8GB RAM will be nice with good GPU you have great combo. But still think your 8800GTX its not enough for this game, try OC'ed your CPU and GPU,maybe slightly you will improve, but not too much

About the your spec,i've few months tried Crysis 2 on similar spec PC(E6600,4GB RAM and 260GTX) and must say i've run just few levels, but still think this PC just struggled in some massive scenes, later on i swap for friend i3 OC'ed to 4GHz,12GB RAM and same GPU and must say much better gaming experience with this combo

There's nowt wrong with the E8400 - it's only dual core, but those cores are fast.

95% of games aren't multi threaded anyway.

The 8800GTX is on a par with the 6770? You'll need to push the budget to £150 to see any decent improvements.

I may have a buyer for the 8800 if you are looking to sell.

FWIW I'm in a very similar boat:
Q6600
6gb ram
8800GTX

now, my windows index is 6.9 from a 4 year old machine that's not bad. My graphics card is the weak point (nothing taxes the cpu or even ram really even when running VM's for work), it does help that sys drive is ssd.

So on to the question, I recently did this exact analysis when a deal on 550 GTX's (I prefer nvidia) were on special for 70...I ran all the numbers and going SLI with them would have been the only way (SLI/ x-fire have inherent issues). My conclusion was that it's not worth upgrading unless my budget stretches to a 560/570 as I want the performance & dual dvi out etc which you simply don't get on the cheaper cards.

Ebuyer is doing a gtx560 for £126, its a little over your budget but its probably as best a card you will get for the price, unless you wait a month or so for everything to drop

GTX 295 is too old and power hungry !

As stated the GTX 460 and the upgrade to 560 are both powerful and lower cost to run, what is the spec on your current PSU ?

dunx

P.S. 2 x GTX 460's @ 880 MHz in mine...

No ! that's DDR3 it won't fit your PC !

dunx

P.S. Does the PSU have four spare 4-pin Molex connectors and/or a six pin PCI-E power lead ?

PSU is a good one, assuming you have all those plug-in leads it should be fine, I have the 850w version in one of mine

DDR2 has fewer connectors, DDR3 is a major upgrade for performance, sadly the old spec. DDR2 is getting more expensive as they are almost obsolete now.

Speed is in the range 800 MHz to ( 1066 MHz also rated as PC2-8500 )

HTH

dunx

P.S. Back to the graphics card, it's always easier to get a single card working properly, than a X-fire/SLI set-up. IMHO. I rate the GTX 460 in mine, but a GTX 570 is a lot more money. I trawl ebay for bargains as I'm bored.... LOL

Could be close, beware of any high pitched whine or screaming from the voltage regulators under heavy load.

dunx

P.S. Nearly as old and greedy as the GTX 2x5 you mentioned earlier...

Mate the best bang for your buck is to upgrade the cpu. If you aint got a big budget then overclocking the cpu is risky. I advise u get an AMD bulldozer quadcore. 3.6ghz standard which is plenty. Im running a 1200 watt corsair psu with 16gb ram a gigabyte 880 DDr3 motherboard and a £700 zotac graphics card and 1Tb Hdd. U no very little about computers as mine was built and maintained by my brother. The cheaper version £60 AMD chip is better for games than cheap intel chips. For a decent intel my bro says u wanna be paying anything upto a grand! He has a overclocked air condition cooled chinese supercomputer and has had 7.2 Ghz on higher voltage tests. No's his stuff with comps
