No figures but I'm sure I've read the biggest spikes occur when you kick up a PC.

Also, starting up is the biggest strain on the components.

Agree with Chris. Your pc will last longer if it isn't switched on and off too many times. Thats a good enough excuse for me

Pc probably comsume the same as a (plucking figure out of thin air) 100 watt light bulb left on all day.

I was under the impression from science at school the more you use, the cheaper it gets per Unit?

P=IV so 2amps * 240v is 480 watts

That's if it's a constant 2amps not a peak figure........

You do have to net that off against the saving on your central heating with all the heat its generating though

Your PC is unlikely yo be be using 480W when idle, more like 100-200 with the monitor off.

I don't think even our servers run much over 300W and they're running 9 HDDs.

100W for 24 hours is 2.4KWh. At 10p per KWh (say) that's 24p a day, even cheaper if you have economy 7 overnight. And almost all that energy will come out as heat.

Routers are designed to be left on... even cheap ones... dont worry about it.. just dont cover it up with something.. and dont sit it on a carpet if it has feet, as youll get no air under it..

My firewall (486dx4 desktop pc) and home pc stay on ALL the time.. erm.. making use of my 256k connection Never worried about it... if case you are bothered the average house uses 7amp of elecy during the day.. With everything on in our house one evening we were only using 8amps..

Wouldnt worry about leaving it on... like said above it will come out in heat anyway...

if you are worried about the amount of juicy the PC is taking, use a laptop. if that's not an option, make sure your PC got ACPI and APM install. it will power down components that are not used automatically.

I have a server, firewall, 2 desktops that are permanently on and 2 laptops that are frequently used with the 512 cable modem - can't say i notice a huge increse in the bill and the room stays nice and warm !!!!

just make sure that you have decent web defenses if you have a permanent web link
