Default Laptop ram

I'm thinking of upgrading the ram on the laptop, it has 3gig as standard and it seems to use most of this and its becoming a little slow. I was looking at 8gig as thats the max it can take.

Is it worth putting it in or is it more to do with the poor i3 cpu? Spotted this ram on ebay and seems a bargain?

What version of Windows* are you using? If it's any flavour of XP, you'll be wasting your time going any higher with your RAM, as the operating system simply won't be able to make use of it anyway. If it's Vista or 7, 4GB is considered by most to be the 'ideal' quantity, but if that 8GB module is no more expensive than a 4GB module it would do the job just as well.

That said, you should be wary of cheap RAM modules on ebay which are described as 'HD'. Compared to 'low-density' modules, these have the individual memory cells on the main module arranged in a different way (at the electronic level, not just how they're physically laid out on the circuit-board), which means they're not compatible with some laptop motherboards.

* if you're not using Windows, why don't you already know the answer to your question?

As above Steve SSD and 8GB RAM will do job nicely, but if you are running extensive programs like Photoshop,Music Production software you will see difference with 8GB Ram.
I was run on my brother HP i3 and 4GB RAM Ableton Live and been sluggish, after addding more RAM,now working like charm.
