USB powered 24-bit colour

Look out for Photoshop "lite" software packages.
If footprint size is no problem, larger scanners can be cheaper.
The more you pay the better resolution you will get. Think about what you are thinking of scanning. If you want to print A0 scans of photos, then you will want a high resolution scanner.
For a basic "scan for scoobynet posting" solution then a £50 USB scanner should do the job. For more extravagant needs, expect to pay upwards of £300.

Not really. The brand names will usually get you brand name software. But IMO at the end of the day, a scanner is a scanner. Just a glorified photocopier, not much in the way of fancy parts.
But you may consider going for a brand name on the basis of better tech support
Canon, Fuji, Epson, HP, Kodak, all good ones to look out for bargains.

Dunk, Cheers for the advice, paulr, I was going to go for a cheaper one as the amount it is going to get used doesn't justify big outlay.
P.S. Come on Bolton
Just psyching myself up to support United, uugh.

I got a umax UB 1200 Plus, its a USB one. Scan quality is superb for 40 quid, very fast aswell, make sure you get a usb one (or scsi) or you'll be waiting ages for the transfer.
Did have a slight problem with it, the light don't come on
but its being swapped over for a newun today
