Question

Company abc.com is running internal DNS server on domain abc.com Their website www.abc.com is hosted externally. What changes to the DNS need to be made to access www.abc.com ??? As at the moment it just looks at their internal server...

thanks

Add a new A record for WWW should do it (assuming that they don't have an internal host called www !)

They should have set it up so that the internal domain was

internal.abc.com so any hosts would be host.internal.abc.com and let the internal DNS boxes be secondary to the abc.com external primary.

I think that makes sense (well it does to me !)

Vague stirrings in my mind but I can't remember

There was a good article in last month's PCPRO covering virtually exactly what you're talking about (Tech columns), with the reasons why internal DNS may have trouble with real-world DNS. Don't ask me as to what the probs were but the answers are there!

Might be able to find the article for you if you want it? When at home & phone you tomorrow.

Jeff, I THINK using internal is EXACTLY WHAT YOU SHOULDN'T do, reasons as per the article mentioned by PUFF in PCPRO. Thanks for all the replies. It is working fine and am inclined to believe it's setup properley.

Yup, tis exactly what I do. Big smug for me when I read Jon H's article in PC Pro about doing it this way.

Just means adding in extra A records for any public machines outside the internal AD.
