I've been asked to set-up Rexec on Windows NT server to allow unix to run commands on it (I think). I haven't got a clue what's going on to be honest. Any idea where I can get the necessary services from and how I set it up?

It looks like you can run rexec from both WinNT and UNIX clients but other than that I have no idea.

Any help much appreciated.

What is it your actually trying to achieve ?

AFAIK you will need 3rd party software to provide a REXEC daemon service on NT. There are several different products available both commercial and shareware

The NT server resource kit only provides you with a REXEC client.

Michael, thanks for your reply.

Basically, the UNIX team want to make a call from UNIX to one of our NT boxes to execute a command remotely. We're bringing one of our software suppliers in-house, and as such we're trying to recreate their environment exactly. I think that making calls from NT to UNIX is relatively easy (I know nothing about UNIX itself though) although we're trying to do it the other way around.

This Microsoft Knowledge Base article makes reference to a 'rexecd' service but I can't seem to find that anywhere. Is that a third party only product?

It would suggest to me that Microsoft don't have the server daemon function as part of their OS. So, yes it would need to be supplied by a 3rd party.

AFAIK, they only give you the client i.e. NT -> UNIX and not the reverse.
