Question Domain Names

I need some advice. One of my kids will be looking for a job this time next year after finishing uni with quite a bit of work experience.

So I wondered about getting her a domain name so she could put her cv and various other bits and pieces which might include, for example, a brief clip of part of her actual work experience.

Now I have found out which names are available and to my surprise some with her name are about. Example www.gladyslock.co.uk (not her real name )

But what is the best place to get a domain name?? Google throws up a myriad of domain companies but I haven't a clue as to a good one. Are prices controlled?

How many MBs of web space would we need for a simple cv plus a few photos and may be a couple of video clip? And an e-mail facility. 250 mb seems to be about par for the course btw.

And how does having your own domain link up with the iSP you use?

Any other pointers invited. Cheers, David

And how

Use Google themselves, instant web space, email, apps and more for £10 a year with your own domain name.

Probably not. Do you really want .co.uk they're a bit second rate.

Have a look at Titan. I've had a domain and hosting with them for many many years, faultless service and customer support is excellent.

The other host I use a lot is HostPapa, they are Canadian, and are pretty good too. I manage two sites with them. CAD$5.95 a month when you sign up fro 3 years, CAD$6.95 a month signing up for two years, and CAD$7.95 a month when you sign up for 1 year. Looks like they also offer on free domain name for life, along with unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth.

just remember registering a domain and hosting a domain are two different things

registering is purely administrative and hosting is purely technical

Thanks folks, very helpful.

Jack - I thought .co.uk was a kind of default for individuals and small companies in UK and .com was for larger international companies? Am I wrong on this?

Thanks Hodgers.

Marcus. HostPapa looks good and friendly. Would we need international rates to phone technical support. Or perhaps they have a Skype facility? I couldn't find answer on their website. Titan looks fine too except I have no idea of which level of hosting I will need and don't understand some of the terminology. For example what would I need to show a short video clip on site and is 3 mb bandwidth enough?

Onwards and upwards!

Hostpapa has pretty good online ticket support system, used it a few times with queries I have had. Pretty sure there is a live support thing. Notbsure about skype though.
I'd suggest emailing Titan with your needs and they should be able to suggest a package for you, they may be able to talior one fir you too.

.com can be used by anyone and if you can get the .com of your choice then do.

Don't get dragged into an expensive hosting package, Google will do everything you want and more for an incredible price. If you need to know more take a look at http://www.gonegoogle.com

Good point B2Z, thanks.

I am assuming a basic website isn't too hard to construct for a reasonably competent youngster with some help from friends and all the help tools that are around? She wouldn't be able to afford a designer and I am hopeless!

As above, bought the domain name for our wedding website from there, then designed and hosted a site using http://www.weebly.com/

Very easy

To be honest i'd go for a blog with blogger, no need to shell out money for a dot com
yourname.blogger.com
no need for hosting then, buit for domain I recommend godaddy and hosting hostagtor or justhost (or me, even)

you can easily add/update stuff, can add a design or add your own template

or wix.com is ok but the more complicated you make it the longer it will be to load esp for those on dial up

.com is more universal (or for USA) .co.uk is obviously uk based
more for google listings, someone searching on google.co.uk its more likely to list uk based sites ie. .co.uk
foreign english speakers searching on google.com will list .com sites but may also depend on their location when searching

Wink

Thanks LM.

The plan would be just to just use the website as a tool to mail a job application to key parties. Getting a decent job is hard work these days so if this approach gets another grand per year in salary it will be a good investment.

I think a cv. if done properly, could be more attractive than just a cv mailed as an attachment. It could certainly provide more information e.g. pictures of work experience which the recipient could open if they wished. Getting the balance between showing off and coming across as a friendly human being would be critical but I think we could get that right

So not really critical from a search point of view. It also seems a good idea to buy a suitable domain while it is still available. David
