Default Wii - stopped playing discs ?

Anyone here into the Wii modding scene ?? sons original white one which has had both a modchip and softmod mods carried out for some time now has suddenly stopped playing discs ( original or backup ) do not even get a disk reading error just fails to show disk image on disc channel on main menu. has also stopped opening up homebrew apps. apps are still on screen but will just not open up just displays black screen.

Wii is still on 3.1e software, everything else sees to work if you know what I mean ie turns on okay does not seem to be " bricked "
would have said the laser was gone but just cant understand why it would not still open up the hmebrew apps unless the drive still has to kick in before the apps open ??

anyone any ideas ??
