Hi Guys and Gals,

Have a user at work who has password protected a word 97 document, and guess what has forgotten the password !

Does anyone know of a utility that will crack a word 97 password ?

Many thanks,

Darrell

Try "Save As", when the dialogue box comes up - choose "Options", uncheck the "Read Only Recommended" box and delete the password.

I'm sure this has worked for me.

Thanks father_jack, but the password is too long for the demo version of the word hack program.

Thanks for the info. tho.

Darrell, the following has worked for me before on older versions of Word, but no guarantees I'm afraid. Works best if the user chose password protection last thing before saving the document (apparently):

1. Make a copy of the file in Windows Explorer.

2. Rename the copy to give it a .TXT suffix

3. Open the TXT file in Notepad.

4. Make the silly sod sit there and read through all the crap until they spot their password.

Note:
If you're lucky it'll be somewhere near the end of the text.
If they remember part of the password, do a search for the bit they remember as this speeds things up considerably.

Just hope it's not a huge doc.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Steve
