I went all out and bought some Turtle Beach Ear force X4's. Not cheap but wow, I can hear a pin drop at 400 yards in Rainbow 6 Vegas! They are supposed to be 5.1 and do sound great. They are wireless too and a set of rechargeable (2xAAAs) last quite a while.

No idea how they compare to cheaper models so can't comment.

Also X4 here too, and I can't fault playing R6, my mate keeps getting wasted by the terrorists with his non surround sound Always telling him which door is opening, but by then it's too late

These have now been replaced by the x41 model, which now has digital and 7.1 sound. But heard a few issues with them, such as the headphone socket falling out and distortion.
