Default iPhone OS 3.0

As some may be aware, Apple had a media event to discuss the new iPhone OS.

Finally they have added two wanted features, copy & paste and MMS. That should shut up the detractors for a little while. No doubt there will be complaints about how the features work though

Cut and Paste
MMS
Bluetooth Stereo
Recieve contacts, Audio Files etc
Push Notifications
Turn-by-Turn GPS (ie SatNav)
new SDK with access to pretty much everything
Dock connection/bluetooth access for accesories
Spotlight search across entire phone
Peer-to-Peer 'bonjour' bluetooth
Notes Sync

I think thats pretty comprehensive and I'm not disappointed.

My remaining wishes
To Do Sync with Outlook
Tethering.

They are on the Q&A now.

Seems like Tethering is supported in OS3.0 but it depends if the carrier will make it available.....and for how much!

Come O2, it should be free!

At last

Serious contender now. Shame it's only on O2. I'm on Voda and am VERY happy to stay there.

Tethering basically means connecting the iPhone to your laptop and using it as a modem.

There was an app called NetShare that allowed this, but the Networks got a bit uppity about it. Probably because they like to charge more for tethering than normal data usage on the iPhone.

You could probably get an app that allows tethering now, but you'd need to jailbreak the iPhone, plus your Network might be a bit miffed and work out what you're doing and charge you for it.

Really? that's a bit odd, surely it can't be that difficult to add those features?

I'm glad they added copy and paste. I use this loads on my Blackberry, so much so I could not move to an iPhone. I can now

That looks good -- certainly the cut and paste is a huge oversight that has finally been rectified.

Now it just needs to be on another network as O2 doesn't work very well where I live and I get fed up with cat&mouse with unlocking.

Great job Apple.

If any developers are listening I'll take a Bluetooth touchpad for my Laptop and Alpine Stereo compatibility, oh and Tom Tom, using my already purchased maps.

You'd think so. I think it's trying to get it to work with both Windows (Outllook) and OSX (Mail)) thats the issue. They don't have quite the same Tasks/Notes system.

It's Tasks sync that I miss most. However, I believe most of the iPhones 'flaws' have been addressed by 3.0. It's not a perfect phone but I wouldn't be without it. I just love it and it was every penny I've spent on it.

There have been rumors of an iPhone Nano, thought it's meant to be, initially anyway, for Asian markets.

OS3 is meant to be released in Summer, and the WWDC is probably going to be in June, so I'd say that is when the new OS is released and it's possible at the same time they might update the iPhone. As for what would be in the update, well, most of the issues people had will now have been addressed, and if they are not, then I'd say most could be done in software. Hardware wise, well, I'd like to see higher capacity devices, a 32GB and 64GB iPhone would make some sense, especially if there is a similar capacity iPod Touch. Perhaps a better camera, or at least one that can be moved to face the screen, thus allowing proper self-video features, ideal for vid-calls.
I'm not sure what else you could put in there.

I'm curious about the Bluetooth side of things, I'm guessing, as I've not fully read everything, that they aren't allowing file copying to/from the iPhone, which does make sense from a "prevent the hackers" point of view, though I support the hackers, the iPhone should be a free device, we should be able to choose which network and what apps we can put on the phone.

Better camera would be good (the current one isn't great). Might tempt me to switch to an iphone later this year if it did. Wonder how this will compare with the new N97?

Camera with flash is need IMO. Doesn't have to be massive megapixel but probably a higher count than the current one.

Apparantly Video would imapct with the type of flash memory Apple use - too much constant writing. Not sure how whether this is true or just an Apple excuse.

If it had that, memory bumps and multi-core processor, I would be over the moon. As long as the battery lasted!!

They're slowly getting there. I may consider the v3 when they announce it if they carry on catching up with the big boys.
