Question

Any one out there using the "free" NTL isp thingy ???

Would it be worth the £14.99 a month to upgrade to Broadband ??

I'm on BT ADSL which I think is roughly the same speed.
It has made surfing the net so much more enjoyable, I've had to buy a bigger hard disk to cope with all the mp3's I download.

Have Blueyonder broadband & well impressed with it. Makes downloads from the members gallery almost instant. Not so frustrating anymore to download a pic only to find out that its yet another one of Dave T-S's wrx;-)

I have 'free' NTL 56k - which is no longer free.

The 14.99 service you are talking about is only 128k I think. You can get cable modem at 512k for 24.99. i dont reckon you'll see a great difference with the 128k service.

N.B. I use the word service with relation to NTL figuratively, as generally the 2 don't go together. I was happy to put up with probs when free, dunno about now though - have contacted help@ntlworld.com twice 3 weeks ago, no reply to either yet!

Broadband/ADSL gets a big thumbs up from me.

Pipex are doing a great deal at the mo. No install fee and £29.99 a month with a 12 month contract that if broken you have to pay £50 for the original install...

It is getting good revues

No connection with Pipex.....

Totally agree with Dan and others. We've had NTL broadband for nearly 3 months now!! Fantastic - how did we used to get by with a dodgy dial up modem?

I'm with BT and it rocks - but pipex sounds like a good deal. Get a DSL router - I've not instaled it yet, but it looks nice

BT down point - if you move you lose - you have to pay till the end of the contract.

Worst thing for us was that we had it from May 01 to Nov 01 with a rather useless company called Tiscali. It went out at the end of Nov 01 with no promised fix date Had to use dial up all over x-mas installing our new pc's - nightmare ! BT missed the first install date, but turned up on the second - and speed surf since then.

I went from NTL world (56k) to broadband (512) about 6 weeks ago. Best money I've ever spent. It has totally transformed the web into something usable.

Only complaints are from my wife as I now spend hours 'on that bloody computer'.

Once you discover things like Morpheus & Direct Connect you WILL need a bigger hard disk though !

Just do it !

You will also need to get a firewall as you will almost certainly leave your PC on and connected for long periods of time.

Remeber to disable it when installing the cable connection though - I didn't and it took me hours to work out why I could not see the cable box !

.....also find out how they do it in your area. For me it was an ethernet card into the PC then run (straight) ethernet cable to the back of the set top box.

You want to get all this ready before ordering it as they switch it on within an hour or so of your phone call.

Guys, do I take it that those have he NTL broadband aleady take digital cable TV from them? How much extra is it on top of the TV, and I guess you still have to pay their phoneline standing charge?

I would like it but £30 per month on top of the TV and phone cant be justified for me - ohh and plus £50 for a network type modem for me old PC too I guess?

Cheers fo any advice.

It seems to vary by region. In my area you need the full digital TV deal, but in other areas you can just get a cable modem.

Mine is 512k download and 128k upload - which is fine - unless you're running a business it's the download that you care about. (I think they throttle the upload so that business users go on a business tarrif).

Diesel,

I had two ntl phone lines in but no TV. Was thinking about broadband before the charges but these pushed me into having broadband.

This year £5 for dial up + £7.50 for second line = £12.50
Next year £10 for dial up + £7.50 for second line = £17.50

128k Broadband £15. No reason not to.

There is a £25 installation fee. I'm currently downloading three to four times faster with the 128k broadband than I did with 56k dial up and there are no dropped connections to spoil the fun.

Cheers
Lee

Gotta say that the 512kbps service from NTL is the best 'computer-related' investment I've made. No need to worry about silly modem dial-up problems or busy lines. Downloads are ultra-fast - you can happily receive 30Mb e-mail attachments etc, no probs! And, your phone line is no longer tied up for hours on end, while you're surfing.

What's more, it's really easy to network the broadband service to several machines - provided each has a network card.

My advice to anyone contemplating broadband of any kind (ADSL or cable) is - just go for it. You'll be amazed!!!

i use pipex and its the mutts nutts,£30 ish a month no install fee you just have to puchase the modem and micro filters(99+vat) and away u go,subject to location

i certainly get my 30 quids worth a month(nod no wink wink),couldnt believe i had used dial up 56k for so long, always always connects at 576kbps.

NTL is £25 extra, and uses the Pace TV box as your modem, so you just connect that to a network card etc...

Cool

Dominic.

NTL are now supplying (in some areas) USB cable modems.

No need to have the TV package or a network card. Cable come into your house direct to the Cable modem and this connects direct to your PC via a USB port.

Edited to add.
512k download, 128k upload = £25
128k download, 128k upload = £15
You get the same equipment just a software limit so you can upgrade with just a phone call at anytime.

Cheers
Lee
