What's wrong with them? I've ordered a few things from there over the last couple of years or so, and the service has always been very good...

Just off the top of my head:

1) Selling items that arent covered by the manufacturers warranty, but claiming they are
2) Selling LCD TVs knowing there's a defect on them, and hoping that noone will use that feature and find the problem
3) Not honouring the long distance selling regulations until a physical visit from trading standards takes place
4) Not being able to find items on orders that needed to be referenced for RMAs, then suddenly finding it when you dig out the invoice even though they have read out the contents of the order number you are calling about, and it was missing the item
5) Sent a PSU back that was under a year old and it took over 4 weeks for a replacement to be sent
6) Resorting to recording telephone conversations with their support department as they were lying from one conversation to the next
7) Having the phone disconnected when I told them that the conversation was being recorded, which would seem to imply guilt.

And thats just off the top of my head...

IMO, they are a bunch of cowboys

J

Fair enough. I've bought loads of stuff from them (motherboards, cpus, memory, gfx cards etc) and never had a problem.

Who would you recommend these days?

I can imagine the cost of having to implement the temporary DDoS protection was mega money too.

Interesting. Was in there last Saturday for an hour! (Still slow as ever at getting your stuff out to the pay counter ) and the amount of cash they were taking in from punters was immense. One guy spent £632 on kit. So work out that they had 15 people in there in one go spending a fair amount of dosh on gear and I don't think they were doing to bad for an hours takings Still a mess of people either being in a queue to be served or waititng on stuff. The biggests problem is their ordering system is to ****. When it says 10 items it mean't they had non Bloke behind the counter said it was future reading the order for next Tuesday Anyways I'm a stickler and still use them as they are fairly local to me. And touch wood have had no issues with the equipment I have bought off them.

I've used them for about 5 years.

I'd say the initial 4 years was quite bad in terms of customer service.

They have now seemed to sort them selves out.

I also use ebuyer as they are often cheaper. (service is still good).

Also use Aria & CCL

I find the online order and collect at store option an excellent addition. Mind you I did bitch about it for ages (like every time I ordered off them )

However, I have never had a problem with them. I sent a graphics card back I was sure was faulty - it wasn't. I phoned up to have a chat about options and the guy waived all charges (test and post).

NEVER go in on a Saturday morning unless you are waiting at the door as they open... late afternoon is okay

Tried using them years ago but was messed about with an order so got the same stuff cheeper from play.com . Then heard horror story's from people who have had issues, a m8 has recently just received a refund from a faulty mother board they sold him nearly 2 years ago.

Iv used aria in the past for more specialist items but had a nightmare getting a SVGA cable from them recently. Took them a fortnight to put it in a jiffy bag & post it.

Think il be sticking with play & ebuyer in future.

I know it was me that originally posted this thread, but actually im wondering if its all a publicity thing. Amount of other forums it has been posted on wont half be generating some usage of their website.

DDOS = distributed denial of service.

someone has set up a botnet (group of hacked computers) that is generating huge amounts of traffic into the OverClockers network. As there is only a limited amount of bandwidth available it is slowing down the legitimate traffic to such an extent that it can't get through.

An analogy is to imagine someone telling LOADS of people that there is free money through that door over there. All the people rush to get through the door and this stops the poor sod that needs to get through.

I've had a few things from www.scan.co.uk without any problems.

As for OC, i live 2miles away and have ordered off them online in the past simply because their shop counter service is terrible and the guys haven't a clue what they are talking about

Bob - the online order and instore collect service is ideal for you then. All you need to do is let them swipe the card you paid with and they get the order brought through

Got to say though - that guy with the teeth..... scary.....

I've walked into the OC "shop" and walked straight out again once I've seen the queue. It wouldn't be too bad if you paid at one counter, then got your bits at another.

Yep, nigh impossible to stop the inbound traffic but you can protect the servers from being overloaded. I'm no expert with DDoS protection but I know of hardware that will analysis real-time traffic and block the intimidating traffic while allowing legitimate traffic through to the servers/websites. I saw this deployed at a hosting provider when they are under attack. The consultancy charges/rental are 1000's per day while the hardware to buy is 100s thousands of pounds.

My quick fix to resolve a DDoD attack is to take off and nuke the entire plant from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Yeah my company offer a similar "mitigation" service. Its been going a few years now and started off with the Riverhead H/W which Cisco bought up sharpish. Its all done by the US but I believe customers using the service can just adjust their BGP announcements to mark affected networks and the traffic is rerouted and scrubbed before being forwarded onto the client.

Agreed. They deal in computers and Parts so you think they could apply a bit of logic to their front of service

Gets emberrassing as people scatter in the room looking for a place to get out of the way waiting for their order, only to be asked by someone who has just come in if they are in the queue Will make a note to turn up in the afternoon in future, as i was one of the poor saps getting the wild west treatment last Saturday Morning. (Door opens, music stops, and everyone looks at you sort of experiences ).

hehe

I've thought about it in the past tbh. But to be frank I wouldnt want to waste my time on that company doing such things as I couldnt give two squirts of p**s what happens to them.

All this has done is bring a nice big smile to my face, and I expect, many many others too

Yeah would be good if their Card Reader was working. They were having to bend the cards into the machine as it has worn out apparrently
