Seem to be seeing more and more ref netbooks these days can someone just explain apart from physical size just what the differences are ?? anthing in the £150 level worth considering ?? only really want something that I can use to browse the net with away from the main pc, are they powerful enough for most pc applications and do most come with built in wifi ??

seen one advertised in the press from carphone warehouse priced at £155 - Asus EeePC701 netbook with Windows XP worth a look ???

 

Reduced size & weight = excellent portability
Low power consuming CPU's = good battery life

They generally come with WiFi & ethernet, some with Bluetooth, plus a few USB ports, card reader slots and usually a webcam. Solid state drives are also often used as they're more robust than one with moving parts that is more susceptible to knocks.

There's usually the option of a simplified Linux based operating system which will often do everything you want like run office apps and a browser such as Firefox. I'd weigh up whether you really need an MS operating system on it at all.

The next generation, arriving soon, will be delivering mobile broadband, GPS and 720p screens.

I bought my daughter an Elonex oneT+, It could fit in a coat pocket if you wanted to browse the internet when you are out with a USB modem. It loads pages really well in the house on wifi and the screen is a good size to read anything. As for using it for other stuff I think that is a waste of time.

I have an Acer Aspire One A110L. Brilliant little things. It runs Linux (something called Linpus lite) but has Firefox and OpenOffice so great for sofa surfing. So easy to use. Amazon and Play.com are the cheapest at the moment it seem £180.

I think this is the best model to get. You can upgrade the 512MB to 1.5GB with a 1GB SODIMM for about a tenner. But not needed if you're just running the standard Linpus Lite. The 8GB SSD (solid state hard drive) has no moving parts and if you really need more room that you can open it up and replace with an iPOD drive with 80GB if you need to. Some forums dedicated to this little thing and all the upgrades you can do.

But as I say for sofa surfing it's great.

 

Okay great thanks for the info certainly sounds as if it could fit the bill . ha a look on ebay but to be honest there is so many and so many different stories ie. factory reconditioned / repaired 7 day return versions / us versions etc etc that I am not so keen now buying over the net unless I knew I was getting a proper uk version with a genuine waranty, dont happen cheapest high street store price particular model for this do you ??

would I gain much from changing over to xp which from reading the link in the thread above seems fairly simple, would xp use much more resorces ?? just thinking regards adding additional software that is designed to work on xp only ???

Will fit all the Aspire One models. Will only make a difference if running XP really. 512Mb is fine for Linspire Linux.

honestly, i still use my thinkpad x22 laptop which was considered a "ultraportable"

they are quite small with a 12" screen, the floppy and cd/dvd drive is seperate on a docking station so all i take to work is the base machine

they are only 800mhz in clock speed, but for what i need it for (browsing the net, mapping ecus, doing the odd spreadsheet, playing films) its still ideal.

so much so i have seen no reason to "upgrade" it

seen some of my mates laptops and they seam huuuuuge compared with it, iirc i read somewhere that nasa took the x22 thinkpads into space as they were the most portable versions available at the time

the "trackpoint" is miles better then them horrible "touch pad control things" you get on most other machines imo

you might find one second hand for less then £150

It comes with an easy to use (but simple) email client - not sure what it is called. But it's easy to install Thunderbird.

Yep, I snapped one up from Asda last night for £150; can't be bad for that price. The HDD was listed as 120Gb but is actually a 160Gb, which is a bonus

I've ordered another 1Gb for £8.99, so I'll have fun stripping her down to install it when it arrives

I quite like the Linpus OS, but I think I may install the Windows 7 beta and/or XP.

 

Yep got mine this morning, got my dad to go with me and he was so impressed that yep he ended up buying one as well !! turned out his had 120GB where mine was like yours had the 160gb HDD but a quick trip back to Asda and turned out the replacment had the 160 so we were all happy in the end !!!

yep very impressed with the unit, let me know how u get on with the install, not something I would fancy but may just get someone to do it for me if ever required ??!!

Any idea what xp version would suit this best. seem so many " available " ??!! also found the best / easiest to follow guide to installing from a memory stick ?? take it a 2gb stick would be enough to hold xp for the transfer purpose ??

This was the easiest method for me. A 512MB stick is enough.

to be honest not being very competant in this side off things would you personally say carrying out this there is much off a risk off it going seriously wrong ?? and if required is it esasy enough to revert back to the original operating system ie. can you make a back up to re-install it ??

1/ have you yourself noticed any difference in battery operating times with xp installed ??

2/ I take it this is all you have done ie you have not increased the drive etc ??

3/ would all drivers for say the webcam etc be automatically installed or would I have to go searching the net for everything required ??!!

I've put XP Pro & Windows 7 on mine now. Both run really fast, very impressed

 

Tried to put it on my gf's acer one, but petousb won't see the usb drive

 

Anyone advise how you go about getting the the wallpaper to show on the acer aspire ?? have found a nice pic that is teh correct rs, right clicked it and set as wallpaper but the only thing thats shows is the little linux folder type options screen, is there a wallaper page similar in style to xp or is it simply the background to the screen I am referring too ??
