Default New PC build - gfx cards

Am building the g/f a PC for christmas and am taking the opportunity to invisibly upgrade my graphics card during the build comotion

I have an 8600GTS at the moment (which will go into g/fs machine) - will a 512MB Asus 9600GT be an improvement?
(2008MHz GDDR3, GPU 750MHz, 64 Cores)

am trying to keep it under £100 too if i can - this 9600gt would be £76.

better suggestions are welcome as I am not too sure about the chipsets - 9600 is the new version of the 8600, etc

The 9600GT will give the 8600GTS a good pasting. Around £100 you have the 8800/9800GT which are better than the 9600GT. The ATi HD4830 and possibly the HD4850 which are probably better than all the Nvidia offerings tbh.

Another alternative is PCI Express cards, these tend to be cheaper than AGP.
ATi all the way for me. Try maplins or dabs for good prices.

Like I say, PCI-e is an alternative to consider.

I bit the bullet and bought a ATi HD4870 as I was not impressed with my last Nvidia card's stability in Vista (9600GT). Its out your budget but the HD4850 is supposed to be ok.

In fairness the 9600GT did become stable eventually, but my impressions of current mid-range nvidia cards is tarnished.
