Anyone know how to get them playing. I tried the region settings but still won't play.The dvds are American region.

 

I dont think you can - games are fine but films are region set

 

Can you play US Bluray on UK machines?

Amazon seem to be listing a few imports.

If they're marked with region ABC on them, then yes. Movietyme are a good place to check what is and isn't playable as they list region free blu-rays (no need to buy from them but just browse the catalogue)

Major studios have different region coding policies. Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios have released all of their titles region free. Sony Pictures and Warner Bros have released most of their titles region free, but titles released by Warner's New Line division were, initially, region-coded but subsequently have been released without being locked. Titles released by other labels on behalf of New Line are still subject to some region locking. Lionsgate and Walt Disney Pictures have released a mix of titles that were region free and region coded. 20th Century Fox has released all but one of their titles region coded.
