At a guess I would say £300 or less to build that as the parts are really old and I assume the sofyware would be pirated

Shame the OP is banned.

Are we talking about how much you would charge to build a machine for someone? Not including the price of the parts?

I stopped building PCs for people because I got fed up with being responsible and being on the end of a phone 24/7 when the kids have downloaded **** or a virus and it being implied that its my fault the machines knackered.

If I can charge £600 for my time I'd reconsider

eBuyer comes out at £554.44 using OEM software. The mobo has your sound onboard.

Edit: plus the cost of your PSU (approx £30). Assume you have a case?

As steve says, the hardware is worth about £300 (its a fairly low-end CPU, everything, else seems ok though).

IMO I would probably opt for 2gig of RAM and a 250gig Hard drive and use the saving to opt for a faster CPU. RAM and hard drives are easier furture upgrades IMO, just depends on what your doing with it: Horses for courses.

Software: £150 to £200 depending on if Nero and Power DVD are retail or OEM versions.

Add VAT and its about £580.

Just one thing to note: With 4gig RAM just note that only vista x64 will make full use of it; if its 32bit vista it will not be able to use it all.

You could probably buy a brand new system from Dell etc for that price and it would be all upto date

I built a quad core Q6600 with 4gb 800mhz ddr2 memory 500gb samsung hd (dont trust maxor had too many fail on builds I have done), DVD writer etc a few weeks back for £420 ish and that included a 20" widescreen tft. Without that You could have a vastly superior machine to what you are getting for similar cost

You must have a pretty poor graphics card and or case and PSU to manage £420.

Q6600 + RAM is £170 at the least, 500GB sammy (also prone to fail at the moment) £45 and dvd writer ~£15

The worst 20" monitors are at least £100 - £120

Which leaves less than £90 for a mobo, case, PSU and graphics..

The machine isnt used for gaming believe it or not it is used for web browsing and tracing family tree stuff
I used an old Geforce 6600gt that I had in my cupboard which is more than adequate (the owners are in their 60's but wanted quad core)
The case I got a cheap case just over £30 with a 500w power supply.

Also I got the parts on specials at aria.co.uk, why I mentioned it to the original op is he doesnt mention a monitor, so take £100 off my price so giving circa £320, spend say £150 on gfx card, then giving £130 ish for software (as mentioned previously though dont know the costs of office, but vista can be had for £50 ish quid) and for similar money you have imo a vastly superior machine

you can get cheaper higher spec PC's for what you need.
As mentioned Dell are fairly good, and quiet!
Its your choice, I would not install Mcafee, but its personal choice.

With a Dell, its pre installed, licences are included, you make your own backup discs etc. Your best bet is to ring Dell to get a quote, I find them to be fair and honest. Its far easier to let them build and supply you rather than build. As also mentioned you will have support for it too, which you wont get if you build yourself. Its good fun to build your own, but PC manufacturers are making them so damn cheap, its now easier and cheaper to buy a pre built.
Tesco also sell base units, again really competitive prices for base units only.

I assume its going to be permanently on, as you mention your TV as a monitor, then noise is important. Dell are very quiet PC's by default.

if you can get yours built, installed and configured with genuine software, then 600 is excellent.

Good luck

only had the op system which is about £50 anyway. The motherboad had onboard intel graphics which is more than enough for what they were using it for, however I had a card lying round that would offer slightly better performance so used that

I wouldn't want a PSU like that, if it blows it will most likely take out the rest of the PC. Better to get something like an antec NSK3480 (or full ATX equivalent) You can get them for around £55 on ebuyer and the 380W PSU is a goodun.
