Cheers, I'll give it a read now.

What happens here is this: Automatic updates are turned on, XP tells me that I should download an urgent update (SP1). As far as I can tell, it downloads but does not install.

It's annoying as every time I turn off the computer my PC tries to install SP1 and fails.

Is the service pack you're having trouble with for Windows XP? If so, you can download this file and then use it to create a CD with the latest SP3 on it.

Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 3 - ISO-9660 CD Image File

This will bypass all the previous service packs and bring you right up to date.

I downloaded the file from the link, copied it to CD and installed it, that worked fine. However, I still get this message when I double click the yellow updates shield on the toolbar...

The following update could not be installed - Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366)
