Default Red cross appears in toolbar

Hi Guys

I think this is virus related, but suddenly I got a red cross in a circle appear in the bottom right toolbar. When it first happened a message popped up saying "computer infected with spyware, click here to fix the problem" type message.
Now the cross is pretty much there all the time and I am concerned I might have a bad virus - I have Spybot & McAfee anti virus and neither seemed to do anything about it.

Any suggestions? I did speak to a computer guy who said it was a nasty virus and would need to be removed by him as usual virus tools will not remove it - any ideas ????

Thanks!!

Sounds like a spysheriff type affair

Instructions for removal are here.
