Yep. It was the removal of the built in ps2 hardware and additional ports that are (allegedly) reducing the manufacturing costs...
The 80gb version seems a bit odd to me. If you are going to release a larger capacity version why not put a decent size in like 160gb or something? HD space is cheap these days....

For me SACD and BC was important so it had to be 60gb, they're still doing well on e-bay +£400, im suprised as I though ebay had been flooded and they would soon drop off in price, obviously not yet. Check out AVforums there's always someone listing where you can still get them on there, although they don't appear as often as they did, Game hadsome last week all gone now.
Personally very happy with my 60gb, a quality piece of kit, can't imagine the 40gb would be any different other than whats listed aboved.

so a 40GB is ok as I am going to buy one today, from game. What do I need to ensure tat I can get it up and running. There seem to be a few bundles on offer, do I need any extra cables etc as I dont want to get home to find I need something extra.
It is either this on an X Box elite, not sure which really any ideas??

I find the 60gb of sky+ quite limiting, and being able to drop a different drive in there is a completely different issue to selling it with one in the first place (most people buying a console will struggle to work out which way up to put the disc in, let alone put in a different hard drive).
Still seems an odd decision to me...

Both are very where power / graphics / sound are concerned.
The elite has better games, (and a lot of them), a bigger hard drive, and arguably a better online service. However it is noisier than the PS3, has no built in blu-ray or wifi, and there is a question mark over the reliability.
The PS3 is much quieter, has blu-ray and wifi etc, but currently has very few games worth playing.
Depends what you are after really
If you are hooking it up to an LCD/Plasma you'll want an HDMI cable (assuming it has HDMI)
Of course. The situation is getting better all the time. There's still games to play on PS3, some of them very very good - Just not as many as 360. This year will start to see a real ramping up of PS3 support though.
People say this a lot, but I have both consoles and have yet to see this huge list of extra games for the 360.
Only 2 I can think of is Halo 3 (crap) and Forza 2 (over rated, managed about 3 hours so far).
What else is there that I can buy for the 360 and is excellent?

Rasher, I just plugged my PS3 in straight out the box using the VGA cables (as my TV scarts are a bit worn).
You just need the unit and a game, same with Xbox.
Both consoles are as good as each other, but with the 60gb PS3 you get onboard WiFi which is brilliant compared to the rip-off £60 adapter for the 360.
You also get the BluRay player which was a real plus for me as I'm about to buy a HDTV. Plus, I'm always expecting my 360 to blow up and pack in at any minute.

If that how you have your PS3 hooked up now, when you get your HDTV sorted under HDMI, you are going to faint when you see it
Still waiting for my 8 yr old Panasonic 36" CRT to blow up, which probably wont happen for a while yet
, I just can't bring myself to bin something I paid £2k for all those years ago when it works perfectly well, the PS3 doesn't look at all bad on it to be fair.Just rented a Blu Ray DVD to see how that goes, see if "they're all that" going to compare on a cheapo sony dvd player thru the HD screen and then on the PS3, I alway build my hopes up with these things and then feel a little short changed, a bit like going from Sky analogue to Sky Dig, hopefully it'll be better than that !

Go on to the ps3 menu and play with the display settings. I use mine 50% of the time on a 15 year old 26in thing picture is fine a bit better than the old xbox. The other 50% is played on a 56in hdtv and that is
