Default Rescuing a hard drive - SCSI format?

My external HD box (Maxtor Onetouch II) has stopped working. It seesm to be constantly in power save mode and can't wake up.
I'm hoping that the HD is still usable, so I've taken it out and plugged it internally in my PC.
Its a Maxtor Diamond Max 10 model 6L300R0.
The HD isn't recognised in My Computer or in Computer Managment, but does show up in Device Manager.
This shows the HD model as above but as an SCSI drive.
I thought that SCSI was the interface type rather than a drive format?

The question is, how do I convert the HD to be usuable under IDE?
There's no SCSI controller on the motherboard, so is it a quesiton of buying a SCSI PCI card and using the internal IDE connection to reformat the drive in some way?
Is there a simpler method instead?

Maxtor Onetouch II have a fairly high failure rate. I've had three and all three are now dead but the drives themselves were fine and still in use in other machines.

The drives are not SCSI but are IDE drives. I'm sure you get a SCSI ID in device manager regardless of the actual interface type. I.e. is a red herring.

When you physically installed the drive in your PC did you go into the BIOS and set the drive up? Could be the IDE channel it is connected to is not "switched on" (sorry, not technical). This may explain why it is visible in device manager but not in the CM snap in etc.

Sorry, not much help I know

Thanks for that. I'll plug the HD back in later.
When BIOS loads, the IDE device list shows up with the RAID controller. The IDE DVD writer description shows in green but the HD shows in red type and flashes.
The MB is a PK5-E.

Maxtor have a hard drive diagnositc tool you can get from their website. This will tell you if the drive is actually OK. If it cannot pass that, then there is not much point in fiddling around.

I'll have another look - I went through the troubleshooting flow charts on their website, but my situation didn't match the scenarios for HD problems...
