Has anyone replaced their cooling fan in their PC tower to make it quiter? If so any recommendations.

You mean CPU, case flow fan, or PSU fan?

I use a Silverado CPU fan, which in its time was argue3d to be the quietest CPU fan on the market, and came with extra resistors for the power to the twin fans to make em even quieter.

Not cheap though.

I replaced my PS7 fan, rather I got a nice man to do it for me, because the old one was giving out a high pitched whine. I had to go to some trouble to source a new fan, though.

The Zalman are not the quietest in standard form. Trust me, I have 1 of the above. They are only virtually silent when set to 'Silent' mode, but this really doesn't produce anything resembling adequete cooling. Alright for PIII's, but Athlons need not apply when using Silent mode.

Cheers,

Nick

Hmm, you got one of the new ones?? Apparently these are rated to XP1900+, and I know someone using one on an XP1400 without problems. Remember of course that AMDs are designed to run much hotter, and its only when you get to 80C you should worry..

Hmmm, I would like to see an Athlon running at 80c without problems....

Yeah I have one of the CU6000 models.

Cheers,

Nick

The quietest CPU cooler on the market (presuming your an AMD kind of guy..) is the Zalman Flower, coming in at a rather large £35

Not the best picture but its that copper thing, and the fan is mounted on a bracket that attaches to the PCI slot bits on the case.

As for case fans, Papst are the quietest available, but are £15 for 1 80mm fan.. NOT cheap..

Both the above are sold by Overclockers UK, but they dont have the Papst in yet, but I'm told there expecting them soon.

A cheaper alternative to Papst are Panaflo fans, but these are still £10 a go. These are available from Kustom PCs.
