X360 HD-DVD drive ?
Anyone got one of these? Wondering how they compare to a standalone HDDVD player?
Seem like a cheap way of getting into HD for £110 ish, else opting for the PS3, now that the price has dropped.
Anyone know if either of these two these do any form of upscaling on standard def dvds?

I have one and can't fault the quality, however i've never tried a standalone player nor bluray so can't really compare.
Upscaling is only available when using a VGA cable.
The drive can be also be used with a pc running windows.
Edited to say, according to AVForums the standard 360 drive also upscales any dvd movie to whatever resolution you have set, but again only via VGA cable.

You can get the drives off ebay, most seem to be going for about £75.
Got blu-ray on the PS3 personally - looks fantastic. It does standard DVD upscaling to 1080p/24 also, but I think my Sony Bravia was doing one hell of a job upscaling beforehand anyway so haven't noticed much improvement - but its held in high esteem on the AV Forums.
If you've already got a 360 then the add-on is the cheapest way of getting into HD movies but I'm firmly in the BR camp on this one, there are films (well film singular to be exact) that I'd like that are HDDVD exclusive but its not enough to make get both systems.

I wouldn't bother myself. I suspect blu-ray is going to win the format war, but it's far from over at the moment. I'm very happy with my upscaling Panasonic screen, and upscaling Pioneer dvd player. Normal dvd looks as close to hi-def discs as to not warrant upgrading any time soon

-PS3 upscales as does HDDVD on 360. Difference being as follows:
-360 = Plane taking off......PS3 = mouse with a gag
-360 HDDVD Will do 1080p, but unless you have an elite with HDMI you will need one of the 3 tv's ever made that can handle 1080p over analogue. PS3 comes with HDMI by default.
-Both will upscale to 1080p for standard DVDs but caveat applies above.
-Assuming you a 360 already, a HDDVD will cost you around £99 a PS3 will cost you at least £299.

The drive will work fine in windows vista and with power dvd ultra.
You will need to be fully hdcp compliant though to use dvi or hdmi as i do, that would be the graphics card and the lcd.
Worked a treat in vista while xp needed an extra file to understand the udf 2.5 file format, plenty of guides about anyway.

I've got one and a (Samsung) LCD that will cope with 1080p over VGA. Quality is great (Planet Earth especially) but the 360 is a noisy best (well, mine is). Upscaled regular DVD's look good too. I got one in the US (works with a figure of 8 lead) but they are cheap here too now of course.
