If your downloading content from the internet I would bet that you are downloading AVI files which need a different type of dvd player, as proper video files take up lots of space. If what ever you are downloading is less than than 4gig ?? Its doubtfull ots a proper dvd.

Also, check the player supports the disk type you're using. Some manufacturers to both, some to + some do -.

I imagine they would need authoring i.e. tuned into *.vobs to be played in a DVD player that doesnt support avi's etc. Nero can do this for you as can other dvd making tools

DVD authoring - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you look in the NFO file it will tell you, I personally wouldn't bother with anything that isn't 5.1

Its a very small file that tells you everyting that you need to know about what you are getting , It usually includes all serials if you are getting games and if it's a movie it will tell you the length of the film , wether it has subs and which audio was used

Here you go, the NFO for the The Condemned, it tells you the region, that it is 5.1 and it has US subs

Just buy a divx player from argos for £30. End of problem and less hassle re-encoding dvd files
