Default DVD playback broken in WMP

Hi

I have a Toshiba laptop with a Toshiba version of WinDVD v5 installed. DVD playback has always worked fine in WMP.

I was having problems playing a creature comforts short film & I needed an Xvid codec. I downloaded & installed this which broke my DVD playback in WMP. I uninstalled the Xvid codec, but DVD playback in WMP is still broken. DVD playback in WinDVD still works though.

Can anyone advise how I can fix DVD playback in WMP please?

Regards
Nick

Don't know if this will help but i use the K-Lite codec pack from Free-Codecs.com :: Download latest audio codecs, video codecs, codec packs and tools, FREE! but i don't know if this will fix your problem

Thanks for your reply.

I think I've learnt my lesson with free codecs, I'd prefer a paid option that was stable & didn't break anything.

Problem is most codecs are free (even from Microsoft shock horror!).

Perhaps expanding on how it broke the dvd playback may help (any error messages etc).

Thanks for your reply.

The problem with WMP is now that when trying to play a DVD, it gives a dialog that my screen resolution may be set too high & a "web help" button that links to the WMP codec site.

Can you restore the computer to a point before you installed the codecs?

Since dvd playback is broken it may be worth giving k-lite a go (never had any problems with it myself)

Free-Codecs.com : Download K-Lite Codec Pack 3.4.5 FULL, K-Lite Codec Pack 3.4.5 STANDARD, K-Lite Codec Pack 3.4.5 BASIC : K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools
This link shows you what is in the pack

Unfortunately my PC knowledge is very limited so i can only suggest what works for me

Thanks, I may try that. But first I think I will reinstall WinDVD as it may write something to WMP & fix itself.

Reinstalling is what i normally do to cure a problem as well

I use CCleaner - Home as well to make sure when something is uninstalled it takes everything off

I'll give the reinstall go & feedback what happens.

I use JV16 registry cleaner - a little bit more reliable.

Yup it's good, a nice support forum too - with the developer in regular contact. It works well on Vista32 too.

I use JV16 for registry cleaning & CCleaner for all the temp file rubbish.

Hi

I looked at VLC, but thought it had a clunky UI. I'd just like to use WMP for vids - but it seems really difficult.

VLC will play anything you throw at it. Up to you but don't see the point causing yourself stress when there's no need
