Cool

Fab.

"The most difficult part of the whole project was installing Windows on Sigbritt's PC," Jonsson added.
Typical!

A DVD in 2 secs? Surely you couldn't get the data off the disk that quickly?

I guess they are talking about downloading an ISO image or suchlike, rather than reading from a remote DVD device.

it's about time we could though - hard disk technology seems the only thing that doesn't advance quickly these days.

looking forward to a nice big flash drive and decent interface.

Bring it on... (although the transfer rate is still way tooo slow)

Hard disk technology is advancing - solid state drives (SSD) are the new kid on the block. Problem is they cost a fortune at the moment.

Sorry, I meant a hard disk, not a DVD. You can't even transfer data that quickly off really fast disk yet.

Still, I'm sure you will be able to one day.

that's what I said in the previous post! (Flash = Nand Flash = SSD)

Prices are dropping pretty quickly - 40% per year they say. Currently you can get a 16GB SSD for £133 at the moment. Not that big, but perhaps you could dedicate a windows partition to it and stick you apps elsewhere. It'll cut boot time by 50% and seek time on windows files is <0.1ms

416gig ssd next year, altho expect the cost to be high at first.

This 2.5-inch ATA/ATAPI-7 PATA solid state drive, supporting PIO 0-4, DMA 0-2 and UDMA 0-6 data transfer modes, will utilize the latest high-density single level cell (SLC) NAND flash memory chips to deliver an astounding storage capacity of up to 416 GB, while providing 133MB/sec burst with up to 100MB/sec sustained Reads and Writes and up to 20,000+ Random IOPS. With operating temperatures ranging from –40 degrees C to +85 degrees C, the E-Disk® Altima™ ATA-133 model is suitable for 24x7 deployment even in extremely hostile environments.

Sampling for the E-Disk® Altima™ ATA-133 solid state drive is expected to begin in Q1 2008 and ship by March 2008 in capacities ranging from 4GB up to 416GB.

Anand have done an article reviewing MTRON's 100MB/s SSD drive (not quite as fast as the one mentioned above).
AnandTech: MTRON 32GB SSD: Better in a Notebook?

Its still expensive but, heck I want one!
