Vertical lines started appearing - is my screen done for? :-(
Got a vertical green line one pixel wide appear a week ago, then another, then a red one and now a blue one. scattered about randomly. On a laptop btw.
I assume (hopefully) the connection between the screen and unit is started to get knackered, even though its only about 3 years old - as opposed to the actual screen.
Is this something thats fixable ? whats the likely cost?

You're right its most probably the cable between the computer and the screen. I've never heard of it happening on a laptop before but it always used to happen to Psion 5's back in the day.
Guess at the cost, 100-200 for a company to fix what is probably a 50p component
Best call the laptop manufacturer.

It wont hurt to take it apart and check the connections. The screen connection is usually a ribbon with a push on type end. If its be dropped or something, its not unheard of for it to become dislodged.
Seen this a lot of times on older laptops, in fact I have it on an old laptop I have knocking about the house
We have always took it that the screen is on its way out, and tell customers they are better buying a new laptop with warranty as the cost of repair is too great

The fault you descibe where you get a whole row of pixels (either horiz or vert) is called x tab (vert) or y tab (horiz). Its caused by the internal connection to the tab strip inside the lcd panel failing.
Its fixable, but not by meer mortals....very specialist tools (inc a clean room) only.
The video cable that has been mentioned, if not seated correctly would give a much less uniform video fault.
So..in short..screen is buggered.
