who is running this in 64bit and is it much better than XP pro, im tempted to buy vista ultimate but im not sure if there is a lot of stuff which is properly compatable ??

 

I've got it. Issues I've had as follows:

SE K610 software not compatible - no work around
COD2 black screen - works ok in XP mode
Outlook 2002 prompts for password continually - upgraded to 2003
ABit utilities won't work - no work around
Work email on outlook won't work due to certificate/patch issue - Patch available but using firefox until they install it

Other than that, very stable. Not worth upgrading unless you are on a 32 bit version.

 

I'm using 64bit Ultimate. So far most of the software I've tried works fine...

Office 2003, Photoshop CS2, Premiere Pro 2, Lightwave 9, DVD-Lab pro, Easy Media creator 9 etc. Only tried a couple of games so far (Dungeon Siege II and Company of Heroes) but they seem to work fine (I'm, getting 150 fps on CoH). Even the VPN into work from home seems fine. The stability of the system (considering that it is a new OS) is impressive. Not had a single OS crash yet, and that's with beta drivers for video / sound!!

The only program I've had a problem with so far is Adobe Encore 2, but then again that was bug ridden on Xp as well, so I'm not surprised.

 

64 Ultimate working fine here too, had a couple of minor programmes not yet Vista compliant, but has been very stable.

I'm using 64 bit ultimate and it is mostly okay. Although several things do not work: Yahoo is one, Logmein is a bit flaky.

When you buy a new 64 bit PC from the like of Dell etc, do you get both a 32 bit and 64 bit version of Vista? The ads I have seen so far do not make it clear, but I have a suspicion that you are only going to get 32 bit version

Additionally, if you bought a retail copy of Windows Vista Home Premium, you don't get licenses to both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions do you!?

 

Logmein will be fully compatible they hope by the end of february. Although for me it works fine.

I've had a fair few bsods thou Mostly it seems due to the WHQL nvidia drivers and not the standard MS ones. Can't seem to crack more than a days uptime so far. Whereas in XPSP2 on the same box, I consistently get over 4 weeks per session easily.

 

well i think i will buy a copy tomorrow and try it out just need some good new AV as my AVG wont work

Which version are you using, and which card have you got. I'm using the latest (100.60 I think) on 64bit Vista (on an 8800gtx) and it's rock solid.

 

Nod32 works great on Vista (32bit and 64bit). Offers much better protection than AVG as well

 

Had ultimate, (license *cough* ran out) random bsods on there.

Now on enterprise doing the same, well until I uninstalled the official 97.46 drivers. It's an AGP nvidia 7800GS.

Seems ok at the moment, 24hrs uptime and counting, we will see.

I might try those betas I guess.

I was running 7800gtx cards in mine when I first installed Vista (I only got the 8800 last week) and they were rock solid using the 100.57 driver.

Yes you do. The retail box comes with both 32 and 64 dvds. Obviously the license only allows one version to be used on one pc.

If you buy the oem you save loads but you have to choose which version to buy.

Perhaps you should try the latest driver (the 97.46 drivers were known to not be very stable / reliable).

All my hardware is supported on Vista 64 bit, but it depends on what you've got and how old it is. In general, newer stuff is much better supported than older stuff. You need to visit the web sites of any peripherals you may have so see if they have vista drivers available.

Can anybody confirm that you can stream .ts files to the XBOX360 when you have converted them to DVRMS files with TS convertor ?

 

Yes I can confirm that you can stream the DVR-MS files to the 360.

Worked for all episodes of Heroes that I've converted.

Erm, that article is a month old, so it could not possibly be using the improved drivers which were only released a couple of days ago In fact it must have been using the aforementioned bug ridden drivers that I was talking about. Not really sure what point you are trying to make.

Plus, it mentioned this happened with dx10 games, but none have been released yet as far as I'm aware...

 

You can back vista all you like, it works fine for you, great, I applaud your hardware.

But for me I've come to the conclusion that Vista atm is cack.

I just installed the latest nvidia forceware, ok no more NVL*.sys bsods (so far), but just now I got a tcpip.sys bsod whilst surfing the web. This would suggest a problem with the nic and/or drivers, which is bs. As the NIC is brand new, and has not had a single issue under XP

5.1 sound doesn't work in apps either, unless its a 5.1 source. Works fine from the mixer cpanel options, thats all though

OS seems to be a step backwards from XP to me, purely down to flakey and/or lack of drivers as far as I can tell.

And if u read the article they were running a preview of a dx10 game.

 

I'm running Vista home premium 64 bit, Pentium D 2.8ghz, Creative Fatality pro sound and an old Radeon 9700 pro graphics card. The main issues iv'e had are the sound card which is bang up to date, there are only beta drivers available for it which work fine but they don't have most of the sound card functionality up and running yet, just basic sound. Three year old graphics card works fine. My main issue is i can't print anything as Lexmark have virtually no drivers out.
I'd have thought with all the Vista Betas that were flying around for months beforehand they'd be more drivers available. The OS works fine but just being let down by the poor amount of drivers available for it.
