Default Swapping from Norton to McAfee?

My Norton is out of subscription, I always just renew it but it's frickin dear for a download.

They want £43 for me to download another years subscription.

Just been onto McAfee for a look and I can get antivirus, firewall and spyware blocker for £20 to download (50% off atm)

Now I'm concerned about doing this as can't imagine removing norton is going to be easy?

How would I do it? Would I need to uninstall norton then go online and buy McAfee?

Am I goin to have probs doing this?

People actually buy Norton

Plenty of free virus programs that work just as well and dont hog all of your system resources. I use Avast and it picks up everything, also AVG is used by a lot of people but I have found that it sometimes misses the odd one or two viruses (although I have not used it for about a 18 months)

I've just gone from Norton to NOD32 (review here Personal Antivirus Software - NOD32 2.0 reviewed by PC Magazine - Review by PC Magazine) and Zone Alarm.
Norton is a pig to remove though! There's a complete norton removal tool download here:

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

Best regards,

Ian

Thanks.

I'd just decided on the NOD32 idea after a few searches.

Didn't realise this stuff was so cheap elsewhere, ebay.. 2007 McAfee bundle.. £9, 12 months upgrades etc.

My main worry was removing Norton, so thanks for the link.

There are a few Norton removal tools out there. Just google it.

Here is an official one.
How effective they are I dunno.
If it was me, I would back up then format & re-install Windows.

Besides McAfee, you can get Kaspersky Internet Security 6 from amazon for under £25 and it doesn't slow your pc down like the main players but is still packed with features & has superb virus detection.

Been running NOD32 for a few weeks, pretty impressed with it. McAfee and Norton/Symantec want to make me run to the hills and hide - both on a personal and professional level

Nod32 for me as well, don't have major problems with Symantec (corp version) and Mcafee, detection rate they are decent enough, but AVG is a different matter after dealing with several machines with it on

earlier verions of symantec were a pain, where I work we had to rebuild several machines as that was less hassle than trying to uninstall NAV 7.1 from an XP machine.

well the two main things:

* detection rate is dire i.e it doesn't detect that many viruses, which sort of
makes it a bit pointless as an anti-virus package and also gives you a false
sense of security

* it's a pig to get off your system once it's on

people say "its fine on my machine" but what type of argument is that, after working on machines with it on, then using (in most cases) symantec to detect the viruses and get shot of them I hate it with a passion

I ask you with urge to try something along the lines of kaperspy, Nod32 etc, yes they cost money but they are soooooo much better

AV-Comparatives

goto the comparatives tab and look at the results, of course you can't take this as gospel just like all websites but its a good starting point

Another vote for NOD32 here...

I moved from Norton to Nod and never had any problems at all... the good thing with nod is that it gets new updates on an hourly update by itself... no remembering to update...

It even found 1 file that shouldnt have been there after I removed Norton.. just goes to show that the big names arnt always the best.....

How do you know that you have only had one virus? They don't all shout about it.
IMHO you should never skimp on security.
