Digital tv stick for laptop

Question Digital tv stick for laptop

I'm thinking of getting a digital tv stick for my laptop.I've looked at Maplins online and they seem quite reasonably priced.

A few quick questions though.

I assume you dont have to be online to receive a signal and that the laptop would show pictures the way a normal tv would?

Would I need a 'tv card' to enable any picture to be shown?

How do I find out if I have a tv card if one is needed?

Any thoughts on this?:

Hello

You plug it in, load the software, and (if you are in a freeview area) you can watch TV on your laptop.

I have one (not that one, a Hauppage) and it does what it says.

I assume it's covered under my household tv licence. Not free, but no extra?

So I don't have to bother with tv cards etc, just plug in and go?

I bought that one a couple of weeks ago (same price). I can't pick up any channels with the supplied ariel, so I'm going to get a bigger one installed in the loft. Can't see it being much use on a laptop unless you are in a *very* good reception area or in Europe.

I tried using one with the supplied aerial when I was in Bolton and had direct line-of-sight to the WInter Hill transmitter about 6 miles away. It picked up a few stations but only at half signal strength.

You really need an external full size aerial to make it work.
