Default 256Mb or 512Mb Graphics card?

Just after some opinions on what people think is the better option to go for.

Planning on upgrading my PC and looking to get something like this for my graphics card - Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

I don't want to spend much more than this on a graphics card but was wondering if there is much/any difference between a 256Mb card and a 512Mb card? Have had a look on toms hardware guide and there doesn't seem to be anything in it between the two different memory sizes???

I will be using my PC for games, some occasional video editing and Photoshop stuff.

Any recommendations appreciated

Your choice m8 but there isnt much diffrence in performance with the lower priced 512mb cards - only when you go higher up the card spec - have a look at this - you can compare cards Tom's Hardware Guide Processors: VGA Charts

I have this and it kicks *** for the price Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

dont forget direct X 10 is due out anytime so newer games will be requireing this within 6 months so its new card time

Go for the best you can afford if playing new games pick off the chart. I would stick with nvidia geforce cards myself - I run a 7800GT and have done for some time kicks *** on all games max settings. Leave the ATI cards for those peolple who want friggin' hastle!!!!
ATI . You will never spend too much on a graphics card for sure. Yeah blokes card above is ok but you want to look for how many pixel pipe lines the card has his is a stripped down version as only has 12 think mine has 16 or 20 can't remeber. Aterall why spend £100 now and then another £100 in 6 months when you are guttend you have to mess around with settings cause game runs slow or jumpy. You want to mine was £240 when it came out and I bought it for £180 2nd hand.

Thanks for the VGA chart link, thats where I have been looking

I have just found this one Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK clock speeds seem to be a little faster than the previous one I mentioned all be it a tad more expensive... what d'ya reckon?

When/if Direct X 10 comes out wont the card manufactures just bring out udated drivers/software/firmware for cards that are "currently" new???

And yes I would prerfer to stay with Nvidia, as you say wrcturbo, people do seem to have to mess about with drivers and such like with the ATI cards.

I don't believe this is possible. Almost all games for the next year or few, however, will no doubt include directX support for 9 as well as 10.

I'd also expect that DX10 cards will get better and cheaper (an abvious prediction thinking about it) as they mature; early-adoption of a DX10 card now would be a gamble. Having said that, they do seem to be great for DX9 too on the information available at the moment.

IF you can wait a little bit longer the new Direct X 10 cards are just around the corner, nVidia will be releasing the GTX and GTS 8800 gfx cards soon.

Even if you didn't want to spend the £3-400 required on one of these, the current cards will drop in price quite nicely

I'm on an ATI 800xl and can run everything I want quite nicely in 1280x1024 but I only dabble in GTL/HL2 mainly. Theres no way on this earth it will be able to manage games like Crysis when they come out!!

So will the last card I mentioned be ok to play the latest games and last me for some time?

I will never spend 3-£400 pound on a graphics card so it will be sometime yet before I get a direct X10 card.

I currently have a Nvidia Ti 300 so anything will be a huge improvement on this!!

I went 512mb on an XFX 7950 extreme edition now they have the xxx out which is even quicker
More memory = better as long as its the best memory available GDDR3 etc.
