Yes you read it right. my 4 x 300GB mator SATA drives have just gone down. I reinstalled XP on my main rig, pressed F6 to install the silicon raid driver and XP failed to recognise any of the drives.

Hmmmmmm........strange i though but i continued with the install as i have a 320GB IDE drive in the rig as well. Went to the maxtor site and downloaded the latest diagnostic software. Checked connections, power, SATA cables etc. The software would not read any of the drives, it would not event low level format the drives either.

2 of the drives are still in warranty thankfully, the other 2 are out of warranty by 2 months

All the information (read movies and music). Has anyone else ever had problems of maxtor diamondmax SATA drives go down?

I had a SATA2 maxtor harddrive go down after about 4 months (it refused to boot) bought a new hardrive (IDE) not a problem since.
Did everything you mentioned (checking power leads etc) and it was completely dead as with you i was not happy got a replacement but not really happy about installing it.

 

I dont touch maxtor drives these days as I find they are unreliable. Dont even think it is down to heat in cases either as I build pcs for friends/family etc (no profit) and in one I built that went down as well (that was quite a basic system with ample case cooling)

 

4 at once! wtf

 

The chances of 4 going down at the same time must be extremly high.

Had one go down recently and replaced under warranty.

 

Have my 2 drives in a DIY fan box inside the case

and one external drive for backup

 

I have only ever had bad experiences with Maxtor drives and will never buy another.

 

The New maxtor drives are made by seagate I think..I have had half a dozen drives made by maxtor fail, most just out of RMA

 

Its more likely to be the controller.....

 

If all 4 have gone I'd guess like GC8 said, you have a controller problem or you had a form of power surge.

Have you reset CMOS recently? Or flashed the BIOS, or loaded CMOS defaults? A lot of motherboards default to all the SATA channels being off.
