Question Wanna get into script writing for OSX....

Is it easy?

Basically, I've got my daughter a Mac for Christmas, and want to write a script that will say, act like an application launcher.

For example, I've put all the media files and music etc onto a fookin big hard drive that's accessible over my home network.

I want to simplify the launching process for the media (without the need for her to connect to the network etc)

Ideally, say have a script with a recognisable picture-based icon that she can click on, and it would load up the music, video or picture files into the correct package and play/run.

Most of the Mac stuff does it anyway, but I'm thinking it might be cool just to have executable icons on the desktop to play her favourite music.

Would a script be applicable here?

Assume we are talking 10.4.x here. In which case Automater might be of some use.

As for getting into scripting, well, macscripter.net is a pretty good site. Plus the finder is recordable, in other words, fire up script editor, click "record" and then go into the finder and do something, for example, create a new folder, move it to a new location, change it's name, then copy a file into the folder.
Jump back to Script Editor and stop the recording. You should then see the script code for the actions you performed.

From a scripters viewpoint that code will be a bit long winded, espeically as you can use "do shell script" syntax to issue unix commands to get things done.

Feel free to email/msn/ichat me about this if you want. I have been known to script the odd thing now and then

The way I did it was to concatenate the .vob files together and create an alias which is dragged into the sidebar of Finder and/or Movies folder then one click launchs VLC ( changed file associations to VLC ) and plays the movie file.

I am sure the same thing is possible from either a desktop listing with the user only having read only access to the desktop icons a bit like the Windows locking down the users . . . .

one tip though keep a copy of the aliases as my daughter likes to randomly delete / drag things from the sidebar so quicker to restore.

You can always create softlinks to other machines files and put the user/password on the keychain to make it painless playing back from other sources too.
