Default connecting to wifi network

Am i doing something wrong here.

I have the Intel pro set wifi on my laptop, which happily finds wifi networks.

i connect to an unsecured network and then in IE set to automatically detect LAN connection settings and it never finds a page. it just sits there 'detecting settings'

do i need to set something else?
