Default Need help buying a new lap-top

Hello guys!

In anticipation of your help, please lay off the techy stuff - it just goes straight over my head

Daughter is off to Uni doing Media and needs a lappy (not Mac). A mate in the know says Acer are very good value and dabs.com is cheapest. Budget is £400-£500-ish but there are loads around that price.

I think 1Gb of RAM would be handy, and a decent hard-drive, maybe 80+ Gb, but I haven't a clue about all the other features and different processors (which I guess is quite important).

Can some kind person cast their eye over this lot and give me a clue?

Very many thanks,

Richard.

What's going to be the purpose of the laptop exactly? What software does she want to run? How light does it need to be, does she need a floppy disk drive, CDRW or DVDRW?

Rather than Acer, I'd suggest a Toshiba. Here are some from Dabs in your price range, although Dabs are not necessarily the cheapest.

Why not a Mac? MacBook is awesome and for £700 with an Education discount they are well worth a look.
