I need a proper email address
I need to get a decent email address (going to post my CV up at monster, etc & don't want to use my work email or hotmail, etc).
Would I be right in thinking that the cheapest way would be to register a domain & then have this hosted by my ISP (currently plusnet), either using their pop3 or having my own smtp server at home?
To save any potential "use this firm to register\host", I've already had a look at previous threads on here regarding this & am going to register the domain with www.ukreg.com.

You can register a domain for £6 for 2 years with 123reg.co.uk
You can configure that to redirect any mail to any other email address. The problem comes when you try and send emails out from this new domain. Some ISPs SMTP(Outgoing) mail servers may not allow it, some might...

Also try registering the domain with redirection.net
As for redirecting emails, the outgoing server has to be set accordingly what ISP you are connecting with. the receiver will still think he go the email from the registered domain name.

You can pay an extra £1-2 per months with www.ukreg.com to setup an email account using your own domain.
Fasthost is part of UKreg.com

I use 1&1 Internet. You can register a <anything>.me.uk domain for next to nothing.
http://1and1.co.uk
I then have email sent to this address forwarded to my ISP (Pipex in my case). I can then use my email client at home (Outlook) or a PIPEX web page if I'm away. All I need to remember is configure my email and reply to address as the james@whatever.me.uk
The best thing about doing this is that you can change ISP and still keep the same email. You just redirect to your new ISP email.
Regards
James

123reg charge £10 per year for a pop box with webmail which would solve the issue... £26.09 for two years of both mail and a .co.uk domain name, not exactly bank breaking...

OK, I registered my domain & then sent a request to plus net to host it. They said it will take up to 48 hours to complete, which should be by 3pm today.
At the moment I'm getting a "550 REJECTED: Relay not permitted" error when sending to the address. We'll see if it disappears by 3pm!
After that, i'm hoping that mail will be delivered with my usual email & I'll set a rule to deliver it to a specific folder. Hopefully, I'll just need to set the "From" field in emails to send stuff from my new domain.

All up & running now! Had to change the MX records (again!) with the domain registrar to point to my ISP mail servers & wait for that to propagate, but can now send\receive email.
I set up an account in outlook & have to select that account when sending, otherwise i was getting email sent from my ISP account "On behalf of" my new one. I'm only expecting a low number of mails on this acc, so not too much of an issue.
Cheers for the input.

Ok, maybe I overlooked the email side of things as currently I can only send email (corectly) from home, which is a bit of a pain. I could do with the option of sending from work as well.
Rich, you mentioned that 123reg charge £10 per year for a pop box - is this the LiveMail option (£1.25 per month). I couldn't see any other cheaper options?
