Default ADSl modem dropping the connection frequently?

My Belkin wireless ADSL modem and router has for a while now been dropping the connection. However it seems to be getting more and more frequent. I have to log in to its web interface and manually re-connect.

Also occassionally it just stops doing anything, and even when I reset it, it is totally lifeless until i turn it off for a while to cool down.

It's a good couple of years old at least, so maybe its just in need of replacing? Or could it be the filter?

thanks

Ed

Several models of Belkin router are notorious for overheating. I had the same problem with my old one, until one day it just died completely.

I've got a netgear one now, and no such problems.

Yeah it does seem to overheat, but the dropping in and out seem to be totally random.

I haven't upgraded my service however they keep upgrading the exchange here anyway so I wonder if it just can't handle it.

They are pretty cheap now anyway so I might just upgrade.

So, Linksys or Netgear???

Either would be better to be honest, Ive set up both but for other people so haven't used them for long periods of time, but they were far better than belkin ones i've configured.

good place to get a router is here

http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/

you will hear some good and bad reviews about both and wireless especially can be hit and miss at times

are you sure its not something at the exchange or that you have a noisy line though, as getting a new router wont fix this??

what is your telephone line connection like? Reason I ask is I had a problem where my router kept losing sync and it was eventually traced to a line fault. On the web browser page you may be able to get your line stats, this is usually a good way of getting an idea of the state of the line.
Alternatively if you have access to another router just try that (wouldnt advise a usb modem though as they are notorious for losing sync)

Netgear all the way for me!
After having a Linksys WAG54G router and a WPC54G (PCMCIA card) both replaced under warranty by Linksys (Their Tech support is sh1te at best) I now have a Netgear DG834GT router and it's performed flawlessly for 12 months or so now!
I had issues with the Linksys router where it didn't drop the connection but wouldn't open up webpages and gave the error "The Page cannot be displayed" - If I then either rebooted the router or disconnected from ADSL via the router admin tool through internet explorer and then reconnected it would work fine but like you,the problem became more and more frequent that I'd have to do this!!!)

Good luck

Mine is the The Belkin F5D7630 on that link.

My 'noise margin' is showing at 31db up, 30db down with attenuation of 10 up and 15 down which is I believe pretty good.

Interestingly my local exchange is less than 500m away

Want a laugh then?

Noise Margin: 8.6 down, 20 up
Line Attenuation, 50db down, 27.5 up

Which I don't think are too good.
