Default Apple and upgrade problem -again-sorry !

Didn't think that I would be back so soon but.....

Our iMac G4 runs OSX10.2.8 and I wanted to upgrade to the 10.4 Tiger.

My Apple shop tells me that Tiger is a DVD install and I don't have a DVD player on my G4. They tell me that I can't install a DVD player until I run 10.4 but I can't........ Catch 22

Any ideas ?

Brian

A DVD drive from your PC (if you have one) should work.
I did exactly that not a week ago on my old G4.

Ah, sorry, saw you have an iMac....
Not quite sure what to do there.

Are you confident enough to take the iMac apart to remove the CD drive?

2 options on how to "force" boot from CD/DVD

Restart your computer and immediately press Cmd-Option-Shift-Delete. You must press all the keys at once. The computer will start to boot from the CD or DVD drive. If there isn't a bootable disc inside the drive when you begin the reboot, the computer will attempt to boot from another partition or drive.

Restart your computer and immediately press the c key. The computer will look for a bootable CD or DVD and, if it finds one, will use it as its startup device.

Tiger does, by default, ship on DVD, which does present problems to those of us who don't have DVD drives in our machines. It is possible to exchanged the DVD for CD's, have a look here

Another option would be an external firewire or usb DVD drive.
