Default Shut down takes to long

I recently upgraded my m/b (with Asus A8N32 SLI Deluxe) and graphics card (with ATI X1800XT)
Since doing this my Pc takes ages (whole process = about 5 minutes) to shut down. Takes about 2 minutes from selecting 'Start\Shut Down' before the next screen appears with the 'Shut Down' 'Restart' options, then another 2-3 minutes before the Pc switches off completely.
Before doing the upgrade I never had this problem.
After changing the m/b I did have to do a fresh installation of WXP home.
System\Devices is showing no problems and I have done a virus check with McAfee.
Anyone got any ideas?

NO idea what is causing it off the top of my head - but try doing a shutdown down from the CTl-Alt- Deli counter and then watch the processes (show all) and see what is hogging the CPU / memory

Which Nforce drivers did you use - this boards needs the Nforce4 x16.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_...nxp32_x16_6.85

IDE or SATA boot drive?

RAID in use?

Trying removing and reinstalling the motherboard drivers, using the latest from nvidia.com. It could be problems with the SATA driver assuming you are using the Nvidia SATA ports.

Odd comment about the Nforce drivers - I just use the Asus ones and have no problems. (I have the same board)

I also use SATA without RAID as well....

Good point . Nvidia drivers with an ATI GPU is bound to cause conflicts.
ATI`s latest driver is catalyst 6.1 with Quality Adaptive AA performance especially for the X1800 and X1900 graphics cards. And Nvidias latest is I believe forceware 81.98 (Although I` havn`t looked for updates for a week or so ,so it could be higher now.).I think you`ll find that its best to use ATI drivers with an ATI graphics card even though your motherboard has an Nvidia Nforce4 SLI chipset.

Odd comment about the Nforce drivers
Not that odd when you've had similar issues due to the IDE component of the Nforce drivers being duff I use the A8N Premium.

Nforce drivers = chipset
Forceware drivers = GPU

I wasn't suggesting using the Forceware, merely that he update his mobo (Nforce) drivers, which are Nvidia.

If its taking ages to shutdown or start-up he obviously has some sort of conflict - which could be I/O related. The Nforce 4 drivers include a Nvidia'fied IDE/SATA driver - hence my suggestion.

Nvidia GPU drivers with an ATI GPU simply don't work.

Asus drivers here as well on my A8N32 (with SLI 7800s and 4800+ cpu). No problems with shutting down (or anything else) at all. I did (briefly) try the nforce drivers, (mainly for the built in hardware firewall support), but gave up trying to get them to work as they seemed to introduce a few instabilities into the system despite it all being Nvidia.

Just a thought, but what works for one config, may not work on another?

Failing that, also run an error check on your boot disk - could be the hard disk is failing.

Thanks for all of the comments and suggestions so far.

I am using the ATI Catalyst 6.1 drivers with the GPU

I have no problems with start-up, just shut down.

Could be a problem with the power management, Try disabling the APM in the bios.

Sounds like something is not responding to the shut down command. Do you get any "Program not responding" errors whilst it is trying to shut down? Also, is this a basic installation, or have you installed additional software on the machine?

Yeah I've had this before, it turned out to be the power management settings on the USB hub I think.

Thinking about this some more and trying to remember the sequence of events I'm pretty sure that initially after the m/b and gpu upgrade shutting down was ok but 'device manager' kept showing a yellow warning against 'System Devices\ATK0110 ACPI Utility'
After doing an internet search I found and installed a driver for this utility that made the warning go away but now gives me the long shut down problem.
I don't get the facility to disable this utility from my hardware profile, only the option to uninstall it.
Does anyone know what the function of this utility is and a work-around?

Shutting down using Ctrl\Alt\Delete works ok
Disabling APM in the BIOS also cures the problem.
Many thanks to everyone that has provided input into resolving this very annoying problem.

Think I spoke to soon.
After disabling APM in the BIOS, the next shut down was fine, but the following one was really slow again.
