What format is it in?

I'm assuming it's in DivX (.avi) or similar, in which case you can't just put the file on a DVD and play it on a standalone player (unless the player specifically supports it).

If you're using Nero to burn the DVD, you can ask it to burn in DVD format ie. playable on standalone players.

If you dont want to get too involved with different types of conversion processes, I recommend a application called VSO DivxtoDVD. Load the avi and hit convert, it also has the option of burning it direct to a DVD when complete.
