Xbox 360 Dashboard Update Coming Monday
>> From hardocp.com:
We received confirmation from Microsoft that the Xboxic information[Xbox 360 Dashboard update coming with bug fixes and tweaks] was indeed accurate and that an update was "imminent". Unfortunately, that update was supposed to head to production friday but a few minor issues pushed the target date back to Monday. There will also be a Call Of Duty 2 update hitting the following day, so next week should be a good one for Xbox 360 owners.

We all know that there are 2 updates scheduled this week: an Xbox 360 Dashboard update on Monday and the Call of Duty 2 update the day after. However the contents of the Call of Duty 2 patch remain unknown. I came across this quote from what is supposed to be the blog of one of the editors for IGN.com. It states that the patch will include ‘many new features’ and two maps will be released roughly two months after the release of the patch. As soon as we get any confirmation on this we will let you know!

TeamXbox notifies us the Xbox guys and girls at Microsoft released a mandatory Dashboard update today for Xbox 360 consoles as we had announced before. Only a limited number of fixes is explicitly mentioned, so for now it is unknown what exactly has been modified.
According to the article, “there are no new features in this release, but rather a series of fixes and enhancements. Some of the items the update addresses are”:
* Improved logic around deciding if saved games should be deleted and offer the option to only delete the profile and to leave all save data.
* Users reporting blank Friends List on the Xbox 360 dash after muting a friend while playing a game in Backwards Compatibility mode.
* Improved synching of games played to Web and in console.
* Network settings: keyboard does now allow entry of - (dash) character in the keyboard.
As it explicitly states these are only some of the things addressed by this update, so it remains to be seen what else is fixed, and whether this is already the update that fixes stability and achievements issues. The update is also confirmed at Xbox.com, stating the following changes:
* Improvements to the Xbox Guide.
* Option to retain your saved games when you delete a profile.
* Increased accuracy of “last time played.”
* Network configuration improvements for Xbox Live® members in the Netherlands.
* More detailed messaging for unreadable disk or region errors.
Although many people would have liked it the update does not enable background downloading, but that was never announced by any of the inside sources anyway. US owners have already reported receiving the update, and a few European owners have also received it. The update is completely automatic when you connect to Xbox Live and start an Xbox Live enabled game.
Update: Initial reports suggest the lockups in PGR3 when going to the Guide are fixed. This would indicate the patch indeed solves all stability problems as promised.

Dashboard update blocks kiosk disc
Posted in General, Xbox 360, Hardware by Curry on January 31st, 2006 at 0:37
Gamasutra was experimenting after today’s Xbox 360 dashboard update, and found out the Kiosk disc that was spread on the internet no longer works.
Though experimentation with the demo disc had not yielded major advances toward defeating the 360’s copy-protection schemes, Microsoft has evidently used the new 360 update as a preemptive move against the possibility of the system’s security being breached. The firm will likely continue to do so through further remote fixes and upgrades, in a similar method to Sony’s continuing PSP system upgrades, which both add functionality and fix possible security holes.
A few weeks ago hackers apparently managed to do some malicious things with modified code using the unprotected demo-discs, so Microsoft decided to stay one step ahead and block usage of the DVD in general.
