Angry ARRGGHHH  How to setup XP network

Why is it so difficult to set up a network in XP? I have 2 PC's that i want to connect both have XP pro installed. I have connected both PC's with a crossover cable and use the network set up wizard on both, they seem to be connected but there not all firewalls have turned off I have restarted both computers a dozen times and still nothing!

Is there a simpletons guide on the web? or can some one tell me what I am doing wrong?

Gave up with that method - too unreliable. Have both computers connected to a broadband router now Still used the wizard to set up the network but the result is much better .....
