You can make it appear as something else easy enough, loads of free proxy servers out there. You can use a programme such as proxyway etc to connect for you, pick an annoymous server and you'll still have an ip address but would seem you come from China, Russia etc wherever the server your connected to is based

Would the proxy servers mess about with my internet banking, for example?

Sometimes it handy to have a site recognise you - well, most times actually - is that still taken care of via cookies?? Or is it the IP address??

Does hiding the IP address have any downsides?

The downside is the upload and download speed will be reduced, taking ages to do anything.

Hiya Ray!

The proxy servers claim to speed up browsing as the data exchange stops at the server?

Also, can you choose which method to use?? Proxy server for something - non proxy for others?

The downside is that your cookies will be corrupted and you will no longer be able to access the target BBS!

i don't see the point/issue as when you're on the net no site actually has your IP anyway, as computers generally go via NAT to get to the internet, so any server out there only has your ISPs static ip, not the IP of your PC. Of course some people do use static IPs but very few really

Do ISP's keep a record of all it's customers and the connection details they use each time they connect to the internet? One would assume that they'd be legally obliged to do this anyway? You can never be FULLY invisible on the internet, there will always be ways to trace what you are doing should the will be enough, the means are there.

As Dracoro says, there will always be a route back to you, it just might take a little longer for the powers that be to trace it.

Like identity cards, if you've nothing to hide you've nothing to fear.

Even if your are behind a NAT firewall, the firewall itself will always need to publish its IP address and therefore you could be traced via that.

It's a bit like asking if you can hide your postal address. There's always a route back to you, so you just have to be sneaky and use tactics to mask your real identity (assuming you're up to no good). Like using a PO Box number, false addresses, moving between houses/flats, rented accomodation, etc..

ISP's are required to log every ipaddress that has been assigned to a user by either adsl or by DDI phone.

The last thing I wish to do is to hide what I am doing - I'm not about to do anything remotely illegal or immoral!!

All I wish to do is mask my IP address when I visit one site, and one site alone, as I think the IP address is stopping me joining in (in the best possible taste!!)

Which is why you use someone elses anonymous proxy, that route leads back to them then stops - or hijack some poor saps pc and route through that
