Oh great so its now illegal for me to modify my own property that I own and have paid for. And before some bleets about illegal games etc, what about if I want to install debian on my xbox ? Also if you install your games on a hard drive they run orders of magnitude faster.

I think what put the nail in the coffin is that he was selling the hard drives full of games.

What happened to old fashioned learning about it by taking it to bits and playing with it. Soon thanks to these developers it will be illegal to fart near their sodding sodding software. Up with the GPL I say

Thats also the great thing with Macs, the compilers and tools that developers use are free to anyone to download and use. You can even download a lot of the source free of charge. Can you see microsoft giving away the compiler tools free and trusting people and not have to use activation codes and stuff like that

You can modify your Xbox as much as you like. Steal games and you can end up in court, especialy if you're dumb enough to advertise the fact.

Stueyb, don't you remember QBasic? MS gave it away with DOS, some very creative people came up with some excellent software and gave it away free. Perhaps Apple saw the potential back then and decided to do the same.

Showin yer age Jack I remember nibbles.bas and the like but never really started programming until pascal came round. As for Apple stuff, by making the tools available take this for instance:

I had a backup.tar.gz file several gigs in size sitting on a remote box and I wanted to move it to the mac . Now if I had been running Windows, I would have to start ftp log in and do a huge transfer via ftp, fingers crossed that it didnt drop out.

With the mac, all I had to do was drop to a command line, run fink install wget and then issue a command wget mydomain.com/htdocs/backup.tar.gz and it copied it across and resumed where it broke when the cable threw a wobler. Can you imagine that under Windows.

A stern deterrent to anyone thinking of selling less than two chipped X-boxes at £380 a time.

It's not the chip that's the problem, it's the HD with 80 pirate games on it and the fact the chip will have been flashed with a modified Microsoft BIOS. You can still buy the chips with a non Microsoft BIOS on.

I chipped my own X-box and flashed the Bios , I don't run any copied games on it. I use it as a media centre and therfore must be a really EVIL person.

Even my parents must hate me for what I've done. Funding Terrorists, killing kittens blah blah blah.

as STI said it's the 80 games on the HD , that's where the problem is.

I've no doubt you have a legit purpose for your chip RB5-Black, but as always happens in these cases, the pirates / scum spoil it for everyone else. I was really thinking that it's good that they are finally cracking down on the illegal distribution of this sort of material...

Well, I was playing tictac.cbl this morning

They still do, AFAIK the C# sharp compiler is actually free from M$ you just have to pay for the IDE and they did this recently with SQL Server too, MSDE as it was known was virtually full blown SQL that was freely deployable you just didnt get the admin tools with it.

Personally I have seen the dev tools on the mac and they remind me of PC development circa '92/93 there is no what I would call highly productive RAD tool available on OS X (I wish there was).

That's true. You can download the C++ compiler etc as well (not just c#). You only have to pay if you want an ide and the debugging facilities that go with it. If you are just batch compiling code (as part of a build process), then you can just use the free stuff...
